November's Current Event Schedule:
November 18-Makayla, Manasi, Evan, and Aneesh
November 19- Chris, Koral, Zach, Ethan, and Jamie
In second and third grade the students are required to do monthly Current Events.
We will do them as a way to build speech skills. The current event does not
need to be up to the very minute. It might be a recent article in National
Geographic or Ranger Rick. The information may come from any source:
newspaper, internet, TV, radio, or magazine. It can be on any subject:
science, sports, politics, interesting people, or neighborhood events, for
example. Of course, it goes without saying that it needs to be age
appropriate.
The child will tell the class about their current event. If possible,
please have them bring in a copy of the article so we can hang it up for the
month. They do not need to know every little detail, but should be able to
give a general overview of what it is about. Please be sure that the
children know what they are saying. They are to talk about this event and
not read the article. This should be between 1 minute and 5 minutes long.
The child can then take 3 questions from the class. This is another
opportunity to practice their public speaking skills.
The following rubric will be used:
Eye Contact: 10 points
Posture: 10 points
Voice: 10 points
Content: 10 points
Response to Questions: 10 points
Possible total: 50 points
