Note to the Parents:
You should expect your child to be completing about 30- 45 minutes of
homework each evening, but they can always do more if they choose to. This
includes 15-20 minutes of reading time that will need to be recorded in a
Reading Record, which will be sent home in your child’s Homework Folder each
evening. If your child is working on homework for more than 30 minutes each
night and it is a problem for your family , please let me know and we can
work out an alternative plan. Thank you for your communication.
Homework Folders:
Homework that needs to be done will be on the right side of the folder. In
the left pocket will be messages for you, information that needs to be
signed and returned, and finished work for you to keep and admire. Please
empty out your side each night so that you know when new information has
been sent home. Information (notes or school forms) that you need to send
back to me and the child’s finished homework is put on the right side of the
folder.
By the way, you will not see a lot of papers coming home in Art, Science or
Social Studies each day and this is because we will be studying in units and
collecting all of our work for unit folders. Most art will be kept for the
Spring Art Show.
A Little Something More:
Current Events:
We will do current events as a way to build speech skills. The
current event does not need to be up to the very minute. It might be a
recent article in National Geographic or Ranger Rick. The information may
come from any source: newspaper, internet, TV, radio, or magazine. It can
be on any subject: science, sport, politics, interesting people, or
neighborhood events, for example. Of course, it goes without saying that it
needs to be age appropriate. The child will tell the class about it. If
possible have them bring in a copy of the article so we can hang it up for
the week. They do not need to know every little detail, but should be able
to give a general overview of what it is about. Please have the children
know what they are saying. They are to talk about this event and not read
the article. This should be between 1 minute and 5 minutes long. The child
can then take 3 questions from the class. This is another opportunity to
practice their public speaking skills. The list of who is responsible for
what day is posted on the Current Events Link.
