| HOMEWORK
- Students should spend between 20-30 minutes on homework each night. (If it
is much more than this, please let me know).
o 15 minutes of reading
o Typically a math worksheet
o Spelling
o Other occasional assignments such as Current Events.
HOMEWORK FOLDER
- Please check your child’s homework folder every night.
- This is a good place for you to put notes to me.
- Make sure all completed homework is put back in this folder.
SNACK
- Please bring a snack on the first day of school
- We will eat snack every day before or after morning recess.
- Please pack a healthy, low-sugar snack. This is our “brain food”!
BIRTHDAYS
- You may send in a simple class snack to celebrate your child's birthday.
- Invitations to parties can only be passed out in school if the whole class
is invited (or all girls if it is a girl party or all boys for a boy party).
Children this age are very sensitive to being left out.
WEDNESDAY ENVELOPES
- Each Wednesday, the youngest child in a family brings home an envelope
with school notices. Please sign the envelope and return it to school
(empty) the next day.
LIBRARY BOOKS
- Our class will visit the Library every Thursday. A book must be returned
before another is taken out.
HANDWRITING
- We use manuscript type printing. I have included a reference sheet for
your child to use at home to remember correct handwriting on homework
assignments.
VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
- Possible Volunteer Job Openings
o Reading Groups: This job happens daily and it would work best if there
are a few parents willing to come at a consistent time period (2:20-2:50
daily) so that we can establish reading groups that are no bigger than three
or four students.
o Correct Papers: This job can be done anytime once a week and can take
up to 80 minutes of your time.
o Scholastic Orders: This job can be done at home on a monthly basis. It
involves tallying the order and counting money.
o Chaperones: We may need an extra chaperone or driver on field trips.
We go on approximately 4-6 trips a year.
o Art Literacy: We may need an extra set of hands on Art Literacy days.
It is done on a monthly basis in the classroom. Each month a particular
artist/painting is featured.
o Holiday Helpers: We will have several celebrations throughout the
year. We will need people to bake, do crafts projects, run games, send in
juice and paper goods, etc. at these parties.
o Birthday Guests: You are welcome to come in on your child's birthday
and read a book or do a project- just contact me a few days in advance!
- You will be working with many children while volunteering in our
classroom. Please remember that it is not appropriate to discuss a
particular child's strengths, weaknesses, behavior, work habits,
personality, or any other issue, with anyone else. Each child is entitled to
a safe and private working environment.
- Some children have a difficult time maintaining appropriate behavior or
separating when their parents volunteer. It may be wise to discuss these
things with your child the night before you come into the classroom.
- Remember to smile and have fun! You are doing a wonderful thing for your
child and for our class!
CLASS WEBSITE
- I will update our class website frequently. If you lost an email
announcement from me, spelling list, vocabulary list, etc. it might be a
good resource for you to check.
- Most of my correspondence will be through email. If this is not the best
method for you, please let me know and we can work out another method.
