Miss Olszewski's Class

September is flying already! This group is a fantastic group of students who
certainly work hard! This is what we will be doing throughout the month.

In math we will be working on analyzing data and working with probability.
Throughout this unit we will work on reading different types of graphs,
including bar graphs, line graphs and line plots, stem and leaf plots, and
pictographs. Once we master reading these graphs we will work on creating
them, both with graph paper and on the computer. We will work with mean,
median, mode, and range during this unit when we analyze data. We will also
explore probability and the chance of events happening. To conclude this
unit we will be having a Watermelon activity day. During this day students
will graph the number of seeds found in different slices of watermelon and
find the average number of seeds in a slice of watermelon. It will certainly
be a fun day!!!

In Science we will be learning all about the solar system. We will learn the
difference between the inner and outer planets and many important
characteristics of each planet. We will also discover why the moon changes
shapes throughout the month and why we have day and night. When we wrap up
this unit students will be able to create their own planet and we will
create a galaxy in the centrum!

In writing we will be reviewing our cursive handwriting. We start our
writing block off with a brief cursive review then it is time to get
writing. We are currently working on a personal narrative explaining one
place our foot had been this summer. We are focusing on an interesting topic
sentence, a descriptive body, and a concluding sentence. Once we complete
this modeling paragraph together students will have the chance to apply what
we have practiced to a narrative of their choice.

In Language Arts we are diving into our anthology. This month we will really
focus on using context clues to figure out unfamiliar words as well as
looking at the characteristics of narrative texts, especially the
characters, setting, and plot. We will be exploring several different
stories to see how each author uses these different elements to write an
interesting story. We will also be working with spelling patterns and
discussing how different patterns change the sound a vowel makes. Students
will be given SSR time in the classroom and should be reading 20 minutes a
night at home. Just a friendly reminder that there are no weekly reading
logs this year. Students will be logging their books and completing a brief
project in class for each book that they finish. The goal for 4th grade is
25 books in a year and 800 pages a trimester!!!

It was so nice to see so many friendly faces at Back- to- School night. Your
support is truly appreciated! Please remember to contact me whenever you
have a question or concern. I truly look forward to working with your child
this year!!!

Sincerely,
Miss O
