iMovie
Instructions for Beginners
Open iMovie
- Click its icon in the Dock or double-click the application icon
in the application folder. It will open the last iMovie you
created.
- File - New Project will
give you a clean workplace
- Prompt to Save as
appears. Give the iMovie a name. Place the new imovie in the Movies folder.
- Workplace:
- iMovie monitor
- Camera and edit buttons
- Clip Viewer
- Time line viewer
- Clips pane
- iMovie trash
Import Photos
- Click Photos button
(below the clips pane).
- Open the album where your photos are stored or just use the
iPhoto Library.
- Select the photo you want to use.
- Select Duration and
change to the time you want the photo to appear on-screen. (best
if it follows the music beat). Drag the duration slider or enter
the number of seconds.
- Adjust Zoom. Use the
zoom slider or enter number.
- Preview to see if it is the way you want it.
- Deselect Ken Burn Effects
if you do not want motion.
- Click Apply to place
the photo in the Clip Viewer.
File - Save
Import clips
- Click Clips (below the clips pane) go to File - Import. The new
movie clip will be placed in the clips pane.
Edit clips - to remove
unwanted footage.
- Select the clip you want to edit. The clip will appear in the
iMovie Monitor.
- Drag the triangular crop markers to remove the extra footage. Use
the right and left arrow key for better precision. Click the delete key
in the keyboard or go to Edit
- Crop.
- Delete -yellow is the
portion that will be taken out.
- Crop - yellow is the
portion that will remain - clip will be placed in the clips pane.
Build iMovie project
- Drag clips from the clips pane to the clip viewer in the order
you want them to appear in the movie.
- Change order of clips in the clip viewer - drag the clip to the
new location.
- Timeline viewer displays movies, video track, and audio tracks.
Select or deselect small boxes to keep or take away sound.
Split video - Break up video
that is too long and/or add a transition.
Place the playhead where you want to split the video.
Go to - Edit - Split Video Clip at
Playhead. Two separate clips appear either in the clip viewer or
in the clips pane depending where the original clip was located.
Create a still photo
Place playhead over exact spot of the video clip you want to make a
still.
- Edit - Create still Frame
File - Save
Add a Title
- Click Titles button to display Titles pane.
- Select the title style you want.
- Select font type, size (A), and color.
- Chose speed and direction.
- Click Over Black if you
want your title to have a black background.
- QT Margins - Don’t use
for subtitles.
- Click and drag the title from the titles list to he clip Viewer.
Record Voice
- Select Audio button to
open audio pane.
- Place the playhead where you want the narration to begin.
- Click the record button (red button) and speak into the
microphone. Click the record button when you finish your narration.
Import Music from iTunes
- Select Audio button to
open audio pane. Choose a track from the iTunes library list.
- Place playhead where you want your music to begin.
- Click Place at Playhead or
drag the music to the audio track.
