BRADFORD AREA HIGH SCHOOL
PHYSICAL EDUCATION

PHILOSOPHY

Physical Education is an integral part of the total education process. It
gives all students the opportunity to develop physically, mentally, and
socially through a variety of lifetime sport activities. Physical Education
helps students achieve the skills, physical fitness, knowledge, social
qualities and attitudes that will allow them to develop an optimal quality of
life and well-being. We involve all students and allow them to succeed,
achieve, and have fun, while experiencing, competition, and cooperation
through a wide range of lifetime fitness skills. We also attempt to
demonstrate appropriate and positive competitive behavior and an appreciation
and acceptance of different ability levels.

GUIDELINES FOR PHYSICAL EDUCATION

ATTENDANCE

Students are required to attend Physical Education Class two days a week.
Students must also pass four years of Physical Education to meet graduation
requirements.

GRADING SYSTEM

Students will receive a numerical grade in Physical Education each marking
period. The final grade for the year will be an average of the four marking
period grades and the final exam grade. Grading in Physical Education will
be based on the following criteria:

Participation: 60%
Skill Tests: 20%
Written Tests: 20%

PARTICIPATION GRADE (60 POINTS)

Attendance and participation are necessary to achieve maximum credit toward
the participation grade. Any absences in a nine-week period will result in a
5% reduction off of their participation grade for each absence, if it is not
made up within two weeks. A student can make up each class by riding the
Schwinn Airdyne bicycle five miles. They can do this after school or during
a studyhall if under the supervision of a Physical Education Instructor.
Students who are unable to participate in Physical Education Class for over
two consecutive classes must have a physician’s statement explaining the
nature of the injury and the amount of class time they will miss. If the
student only has minor limitations, they may be able to participate in
regular physical education class with a few modifications. A student who is
restricted to no physical activity will be given a written assignment to
complete by the end of the quarter. It is the student’s responsibility to
ask the instructor for the criteria sheet for the written report. Students
who do not dress for class or do not participate will be asked to fill out a
worksheet describing the day’s activity and why they did not participate. If
this is not filled out they will lose another five percentage points. This
worksheet will be signed by the student and handed in at the conclusion of
class. This does not count toward receiving points for their participation
grade. Social skills will also be evaluated as a part of the participation
grade. Students will be evaluated through the observation of effort,
attitude, conduct, cooperation, respect, trust, communication, and safety.

		Deductions from the Participation Grade

		No Dress 5%

Absences if not made up 5%

Tardy to class (without a late pass)	3%

		Swearing 5%

		Illegal Absence (Class Cut) 10%

SKILL TESTS (20 POINTS)

Each marking period students will be graded on the skills developed during
the unit. A student will be taught a variety of skills for each activity
during the first four to five weeks of the unit. These skills will be
practiced during class. If a student needs additional practice they can stay
after school for extra help or participate in an intramural program. The
students will be given an opportunity during class to perform the skill
test. The student may come in after school to make up the skills after
school until 3:05 p.m. Arrangements to do so must be made in advance with
the instructor. The skill test may be one test or a series of tests that
relate to the current unit. If a student is absent on the day a skill test
is given, he/she may be required to stay after school to make the test up.
Any test not made up prior to the end of the quarter will be recorded as a
zero.

       * During the physical fitness unit the skills grade will be worth 30
points and the participation grade will drop to 50 points. (Students may
earn seven points for not walking the mile)

WRITTEN TEST (20 POINTS)

Each marking period a written test will be given to access cognitive
knowledge gained through the unit. The information on the written test will
be based on information obtained from activity hand-outs and/or material
covered through class instruction. Any student absent the day a test is
given may be required to stay after school to make the test up.

DRESS CODE

The proper attire for Physical Education class consists of the following:
1. Sneakers and socks (No boots, dress shoes, or sandals)
2. Shorts, sweatpants, or windpants. (No jean shorts or cut offs)
3. T-shirt or sweatshirt (No inappropriate designs)

Students must bring a change of clothes for Physical Education Class. They
cannot wear the clothes that they wore to school. Students must be prepared
to dress for specific Physical Education Activities and the time of year that
these activities take place. A student who is unprepared for the weather
will still be required to go outside with the class because the teacher is
still responsible for the supervision of the student.

LOCKER ROOM PROCEDURES

Students will be given at least three minutes from the second bell to change
their clothes for class. The instructor will then ask the students to line
up in their assigned position for roll call. If a student is not dressed and
in line at the time that roll is taken they will be marked as tardy. After
roll call is taken, students must stay in the locker room and wait for
further instruction from the instructor. They are not to go outside the
locker room unless instructed to do so.
