Course Syllabus for 5th Grade Music Appreciation/Piano

Overview:
Fifth Grade Music Appreciation is a one semester exploratory block in which the students will reinforce and develop their musical knowledge, while learning how to play the piano at the beginning level.

Reinforce rhythm note reading
Reinforce treble clef staff reading
Develop tonal memory through ear-training and solfegge exercises
Relate the fingers of the hand to the scale and piano keyboard
Recognize and be able to play a scale: C, F, G, and Chromatic
Recognize and be able to play major and minor chords: C, Cm, F, Fm, G, and Gm
Introduce the 7th chord
Introduce chord inversions
Play a simple accompaniment with left hand bass and right hand chord
Introduce left hand accompaniment and right hand melody
Projects:
The students will recognize the intervallic difference between scales and chords.
They will be able to translate a written scale and melody to the piano keyboard.
Each will practice on a plastic keyboard at his desk, and then play on the piano.
After learning the chords, the students will adapt the chord progressions to
accompany in both meters of 3 and 4.
Students may elect to develop chord accompaniment to songs in the music book.
