Course Syllabus for 6th Grade Music Appreciation

 

Overview:

               Sixth Grade Music Appreciation is a one semester exploratory block in which students will review and advance their knowledge of basic musical concepts to assist them in interpreting and discussing the properties of music.  Furthermore, students will explore the various genres of American Music as well as some of the customs and music of other cultures.

 

Textbook(s) and Other Resources Used:

·        Silver Burdett Music Series – “Making Music, Grade 6” – Student Book, CD’s and various Resource Materials

·        Teacher generated hand-outs to enhance the Silver Burdett Music Series

·        Various percussion instruments to accompany the music

·        Piano

·        Keyboard mallet instruments

 

Outline of Content:

               Develop sensitivity to dynamics/expression and how it is used in music

               Review notes and their values and perform rhythmic ostinatos to songs

               Introduce the pentatonic scale and use it to improvise on mallet-

               keyboard instruments

               Introduce dotted rhythms

               Recognize music form

               Discern melody and harmony

               Discern musical texture/timbre

               Explore America’s Music

               Explore music around the world
