Course Syllabus for 7th Grade Guitar-Music Appreciation
Overview:
Seventh Grade Music Appreciation is a 45 day course in which the students will
learn to play the acoustic guitar at a beginning level.
Textbooks(s) and Other Resources used:
Resources include teacher-generated materials containing guitar lyrics with chords
Outline of Content:
Semester Course Topics:
· Identify the parts of a guitar
· Identify different types of guitars
· Proper maintenance of the guitar
· Recognize a basic chordal structure
· Recognize and perform various simple and compound meters
· Perform basic rhythmic patterns
· Demonstrate basic singing skills
· Play and sing songs on the guitar in small and large group settings
· Reading guitar tablature
Projects, papers,
test-schedule and types:
The students read from a pack of music containing various types of songs. They are
taught the chords as needed to play these songs. After they have successfully
played all the songs in the packet, the students break up into small groups and focus on
one song to perform for the class. Throughout the class, students will be required to play
chord progressions individually for the teacher. There are ten different chord progressions
that correspond directly to the songs in the book.
