Pumpkin Science

Do bigger pumpkins have more seeds than small pumpkins? To find out, our class celebrated both science and Halloween.

We formed our hypothesis. Eighteen students said they thought it would matter, but five students said, "no".

We gathered materials for our experiment: pumpkins, carving sets, scales, and measuring tapes.

We measured circumference and weighted the pumpkins. We recorded our data (and were ready for fun).

Now it was time to cut off the tops!

Our hands were soon covered with glop and with goo. We picked out the seeds and counted them too.

We counted, and counted, and counted some more.

We tallied them up. Which would it be? Do big pumpkins have more seeds? We would soon see.

When the count was all finished, most were surprised. The smallest of pumpkins had the most seeds inside!

What else could we do with six cleaned out pumpkins? We all worked together to create Jack-O-Laterns.

Soon we were hungry and paused for a treat. Who knew that witches' hats and wands were so good to eat?

We wrote our conclusions and cleaned up the mess.

Next, we graphed the seed tallies and called it a day.

The kids thought it was great!

Science is messy and fun.

To the parents and helpers, we owe a great thanks. Their time and their efforts made it a memorable day!
