Welcome To America!

All Aboard!!! All Aboard!!
This sounds familiar to sea going
travelers, but our Dallas
Elementary School fourth graders
took a trip that was anything but
ordinary.

The students that took a step
aboard ship took a leap back in
time to become the hopeful
travelers headed for the Ellis
Island Immigration Station, circa
1919.

The project was the culmination of
several weeks of study in which
students learned about the brave
immigrants that came to the United
States from late 1800s to the
early 1900s in search of a better
life.

Our immigrants were well prepared,
and were ready to answer difficult
questions: Are you an anarchist?
Do you have $ 50.00? Were you
ever in prison?

As fourth grader, Rudy
Georgetti, stated, I was nervous
when my number was called, and I
was happy when I made it. I
learned why people immigrated, and
how hard it was

In the end, many of our immigrants
successfully made it through Ellis
Island. All of the students ended
the day on a happy note.

Pasta, pierogies, egg rolls, and
salsa were featured in the ethnic
feast that welcomed our students
and celebrated the immigrant
heritage of our country.
