Science Notes

VOCABULARY:

Oxygen- is a gas that plants give off into the air.  Oxygen is just one gas 
that is found in the air around us.  (Like the chips in chocolate chip 
cookies, it is not the only ingredient.)

Vertebrates- animals with backbones.  Most, but not all have sharp senses and 
large brains.

mammal:are vertebrates, have fur or hair, make milk for their young, most 
give birth to live young, use lungs to breathe.

bird: are vertebrates, have feathers, young birds hatch from eggs,  mother 
birds do not feed milk to their young,  have lungs.

reptiles: are vertebrates, have dry skin and scales, hatch from eggs laid on 
land, are cold-blooded (do not produce their own body heat)

amphibian: are vertebrates that have moist skin, hatch from eggs laid in 
water, are cold-blooded, breathe using lungs and their skin, and have legs as 
adults.

fish:

THINGS TO KNOW:
Animals need water, oxygen, food, and shelter to survive.

Animals get water either from drinking or from the food they eat. 

Animals need food to live and grow.

Animals need shelter for protection from their enemies and the weather and as 
place to raise their young.

There are many kinds of animal shelters.

There are five categories of vertebrates:
mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and fish
