Research Paper

One of the most important components of the completion project is the research paper. This activity demonstrates a student's ability to research a topic, read and understand sophisticated material, synthesize information, write on an adult level, and use a format to properly document sources. LENGTH: The required length of 750 -- 1250 words of text can be adapted to suit any type of project. For example, a student that has labored for several months to restore an antique car may be comfortable with a paper of minimal length; the student that has performed community service may want to expand on his project by writing the maximum amount (around 1200 words). SOURCES: A minimum of three sources, including two different types, is necessary to meet the bare basics of this paper. Advisors will encourage their students to use as many sources as are needed for a quality product. We remind you that use of general encyclopedias is not acceptable at this level. FORMAT: All papers must follow MLA format for internal citation, Works Cited page, and Outline page. Consult the current MLA Handbook or use the MLA link included on this web page under LINKS. MORE INFORMATION: More information about the research paper, as well as other pertinent details about the completion project, can be found in the Completion Project Handbook that you received at the beginning of the year. A copy of the handbook is online; the address is on the Dallas School District website and on the LINKS page under Completion Project Updates.
