INFO ABOUT DELAYED START, EARLY DISMISSAL AND

EMERGENCY CLOSING OF SCHOOLS

The closing of schools for emergency reasons creates many problems for all of us.  The school

district procedure and information is presented so that parents will have clear guidelines for

action if a situation necessitating the closing of schools should arise.

A decision to close schools for emergency reasons is made only after careful deliberation of the

emergency situation.  The decision of whether to close schools or keep them open reflects,

foremost, our concerns for the safety of our children, the obligation to maintain the continuity of

our instructional programs and the personal inconvenience that may arise in such situations for

all of us.

Announcements will be made over local radio and television stations when inclement weather

causes dangerous conditions or when other emergencies make it necessary to DELAY the

starting time, DISMISS school earlier or to CLOSE schools for the day.

PLEASE DO NOT CALL THE SCHOOL.

ANNOUNCEMENTS ARE MADE ON ALL LOCAL RADIO AND TV STATIONS!

DELAYING SCHOOL STARTING TIMES

The starting time for schools will be delayed 2 hours (120 minutes) on mornings when weather

conditions make roads temporarily hazardous.  When warming or clearing weather is forecast or

when additional time is needed by highway crews to plow and cinder roads, the schools will

begin 2 hours later than usual.  If the parent/guardian feels that the area where they live has not

been addressed by highway crews appropriately and a potentially unsafe situation exists, they

must ultimately make the decision whether or not they should send their children to school.  In

these cases, students will be marked with an excused absence.

Afternoon dismissal will be at the regular time for all students.

EARLY DISMISSAL

When hazardous weather conditions develop during the day, school may be dismissed earlier

than usual.  When it is necessary to close schools early, the secondary students will be dismissed

first.  The kindergarten and elementary students will be released as soon as buses are available

after making the secondary trips.

When weather conditions deteriorate during the day, parents should anticipate an early

dismissal.  Parents are urged to make plans in advance to care for children who will be arriving

home from school at an earlier hour.  Secondary schools will be dismissed at 12:00 P.M. and

elementary schools at  1:00 P.M.  A.M. Kindergarten will be dismissed at 10:40 A.M. and there

will be no P.M. Kindergarten.  Arrangements will be made to care for children who are usually

picked up by their parents until the parents arrive.
