It was great seeing everyone at conferences and getting the chance to tell you what your child can do well and the progress they've made this far!

Language Arts

We are beginning the story, Hedgehog Bakes a Cake, which focuses on the -our sound in words like pour and sour.  We will also learn about homonyms, synonyms, following written directions, and proper nouns

We are also in full swing with our Guided Reading and Center Groups.  We will be utilizing small group learning 5 days a week and we have focused on many of the RtI skills during language arts time.

Remember that your child should be reading every night!  Continue to initial each time they read on the November calendar.

Math

We are currently working with coins, counting combinations of coins, and making change.

Handwriting
We have learned all our slant print letters and have begun an book of animal poems to help us practice this newly learned skill and soon we will start cursive!!

Science

We are learning about animals in Chapter 2 and will soon be working on Animal Book Reports.  Directions will come home soon.

New Link!!
Here is a great site for study spelling words!  Click on the weekly story that we are reading in class and then choose the Regular Word List or the Challenge Word List.  Also, I have put on the High Frequency Words for each Theme and also the complete list of words that will be tested in January and May.  if you have any questions, do not hesitate to ask!

The kids have found the website:
mathplayground.com.  They have a lot of fun on the various activities offered on this site.

For the 500 most used words in the English language...
If you click under the voice tab, the words will be said three times so your child is able to hear and practice each word.
For practice with letter recognition...
For practice with word families...
For practice with consonant digraphs...
For practice with vowel digraphs...
For practice with consonant blends and reading words...
For practice with vowel dipthongs and reading words...

I also added a link to practice math facts. I also found a really cool site that won't be a huge help to second graders (though it will help with problems your child may not understand) but if you have children in algebra or higher, this site is fabulous!

The more your child reads, the more fluent they become and the more they will comprehend. Please make sure that nightly reading gets done.

Please continue to help your child in choosing his/her book, although books from the class or school libraries may be used. Please keep in mind your child's interests, hobbies, and reading level when choosing books. Having your child read books that are too easy, too hard, or not interesting defeats the purpose, which is to develop a positive, enthusiastic attitude toward reading.

If you have any questions or need help selecting on-level books, please let me know. The website, http://home.comcast.net/~ngiansante/, is great for finding out the level of a book. Thank you for your continued cooperation in encouraging your child to become a successful lifelong reader!
