Dear Parents,
READING: We finished Theme 1 and took our Reading Skills Assessment Test.
The scores for that test are in your child's folder. We read "Heping Out" a
photo essay this past week. We worked on the decoding and phonics strategy
to read last week. We continue to talk about the main idea
SPELLING: The following will be our weekly procedure: Monday we will pre-
test and enter our spelling words into the agenda book. Tuesday we will
alphbetize the words. Wednesday we will write the words in sentences.
Thursday we will study for the test. Friday there will be a test. If we
don't have time to do these things in class they will be written in the
agenda book as homework. You can also see homework posted on this web page
every night. There will be dictation each week on the back of the spelling
test. The words in dictation are words from first grade and high frequency
words your child should be able to spell.
The spelling pattern for the past week was the r-controlled vowel /ur/ear.
The children are improving in their spelling skills each week. We are
trying to learn to spell our words for life not just the Friday test. This
weeks pattern will be abbreviations.
*We are practicing first grade spelling words. Keep practicing those words
at home. The words your child misses will become part of his RtI
intervention. See your child's personal list in their folder with note
attached. Keep practicing those words. Almost all the children have tested
out of these high frequency words. A list of words to practice went home
with some children. I will continue to test each day until everyone can
spell these words so keep practicing. We have already started to retest on
the high frequency words we've had since the beginning of the year.
PHONICS: We have completed our review of the short vowels and will start the
long vowels this week. I will be testing thelong vowels this week. We are
starting to practice the r-controlled vowels starting with "ear".
DAILY LANGUAGE REVIEW: We start each day with DLR. This gives the children
practice in English skills and proof reading.
MOUNTAIN LANGUAGE ARTS: We do MLA daily. It is a review of all reading
skills a second grader should know.
WRITING: We will write or do some grammar component to enhance writing every
day.
MATH: We will start Chapter 3 this week. The main focus is Place Value and
Money.
TIMED TESTS: We do a timed test activity everyday but day 1 and 2. PRACTICE
SUBTRACTION FLASH CARDS TO TEN.
SOCIAL STUDIES: We will start Unit B this week.
HANDWRITING: We have started slant printing. We are almost finished
learning to slant print the alphabet. We have slant printed three monthly
poems. We have begun our animal alphabet book. We will print a poem for
each letter of the alphabet.
Sign and return any papers that I have noted "Sign and Return".
