**I have created a distribution list for all parents who would like to know when new information has been added to our webpage.   If you would like to be added to the list, please add your email address by clicking on the button on the Newsflash page.  All email addresses or cell phone numbers are blind-copied so your information will remain private.  I believe you will receive notification titled NEWSFLASH.  When you click on the newsflash button on the  homepage, you'll see what has been added.**

I just added a feature to our Book Orders so that you can order online.  The papers went home today with the children.  You can access it by going to www.scholastic.com/parentordering

the class user name is lizannesharp and the password is charlie2

MATH
Chapter 3 is on place value (ones, tens, etc). Children who understand a concept are doing enrichment activities.  It will certainly help your child if you are practicing basic addition and subtraction facts at home.

READING
We are currently reading The Enormous Turnip.  Our focus skills for the week are sequencing events, retelling, syllables, and abc order. We are also going to be taking the Theme One unit test this week as well.  It will cover all the skills that have been retaught throughout the first five stories.

The spelling words for the week are:  pack, stack, crack, snack, lock, rocket, flock, block, shock, clock, last*, grow*, color*, black*, and back*.

The CHALLENGE words are:  o'clock, livestock, knock, roadblock, backpack, sidetrack, racetrack, attack, quack, track, last*, grow*, color*, black*, and back*.

We have begun learning slant print captital letters, which will eventually lead to cursive writing.

We will begin communities in social studies.  Your child's book should be coming home so they can read to you what we've covered in class.  The Unit One test is Thursday, October 9th.  We have been reviewing in class and the study guide will come home Monday so that you can continue studying with your child.

Websites...

The following link will take you to a webpage I found on the School District of Lee County's website on reading fluency and word automaticity.

http://www.leeschools.net/dept/curr/words/words%20a&b.htm will allow your child to practice the 500 most used words in the English language.  If you click under the voice tab, the words will be said three times so your child is able to hear and practice each word.

I also added a link to practice math facts.  I also found a really cool site that won't be a huge help to second graders (though it will help with problems your child may not understand) but if you have children in algebra or higher, this site is fabulous!

The more your child reads, the more fluent they become and the more they will comprehend.  Please make sure that nightly reading gets done.

Please continue to help your child in choosing his/her book, although books from the class or school libraries may be used.  Please keep in mind your child's interests, hobbies, and reading level when choosing books.  Having your child read books that are too easy, too hard, or not interesting defeats the purpose, which is to develop a positive, enthusiastic attitude toward reading.

If you have any questions or need help selecting on-level books, please let me know.  The website, http://home.comcast.net/~ngiansante/, is great for finding out the level of a book.  Thank you for your continued cooperation in encouraging your child to become a successful lifelong reader!
