Dear Parents,

LANGUAGE ARTS
We read "Wilson Sat Alone in reading class this week. Our Spelling words
had the at and ate pattern. During English we practiced writing sentences
beginning with a capital and ending with a period or question mark. We wrote
command and exclamation sentences using the correct end mark. We practiced
picking the naming part and the telling part of a sentence.

During Writing/Compostion class we wrote letters to a teacher. We continue
to work on writing main ideas details and ending sentences. This week I read
a story with lots of letters called "Little Red Hen" and will read "The
Jolly Postman" stories next week to continue with the letter writing theme.

You should have received a letter telling you about the RtI results and what
you should work on at home. My aide and I will be focusing on those skills
both in my class and as the children rotate through the word work center. A
notice was sent home about an informational meeting on this subject. That
meeting will happen October 7, 2008 at 2p.m. and again at 6p.m.

MATH
We started Chapter Two in which we will review addition and subtraction
strategies. We will learn about doubles, doubles plus one and make a ten.
Some strategies to use when adding three numbers is to look for doubles than
add on, look for two numbers that add to ten than add on, or add the first
two numbers than add on. The children are getting better at making a 10
with 7, 8, and 9. We started subtraction strategies on Friday.

HANDWRITING
We finished learning how to slant print the alphabet. We slant printed our
first poem. The kids did a great job!! It's hard to slant print, get the
spacing correct and have the form right. We have completed poems through the
letter D.

HALT!
Dr. Horn presented the kick-off lesson to the new bullying program and
lessons will be taught in the classroom. We talked about how to conduct a
class meeting and the definition of a bully. A group of students made a
poster to remind us of class meeting rules. Ask your child what those rules
are. We will do our first lesson this week. Rule 1: We will not bully
others.

Sincerely,
Mrs. Miller
