Syllabus (information on our goal, our expectations, our rules, grading, standards, etc. )

 When is the concert?

How much is it to rent an instrument?

Through Music & Arts Music Store the two rental trial periods are 4 1/2
months at $39.00 or 9 months at $119.00 for violins and violas. 4 1/2 months
at $85.00 or 9 months at $189.00 for cellos and 4 1/2 months at $135.00 or 9
months at $259.00 for double bass

Should I just buy the instrument?

Ask yourself: "Is my child ready for the fullest size the instrument comes
in?" Otherwise you will need to purchase bigger sizes as your child's growth
neccessitates it.
How do I know how much to spend on a quality instrument?
To the point and in some opinions, a quality violin should start at about
$3,000. Violas, cellos and basses will start even higher.

Why Teach Music?

Music is a Science
It is exact, specific, and it demands exact acoustics. A conductor's score is a chart, a graph which indicates frequencies, intensities, volume changes, melody and harmony all at once and with the most exact control of time.

Music is Mathematical
It is rhythmically based on the subdivisions of time into fractions which must be done instantaneously, not worked out on paper.
Music is a Foreign Language
Most of the terms are in Italian, German, or French. and the notation is certainly not English - but a highly developed shorthand that uses symbols to
represent ideas. The semantics of music is the most complete and universal language.
Music is History
Music usually reflects the environment and times of it's creation, often even the country and/or racial feeling.
Music is Physical Education
It requires fantastic coordination of fingers, hands, arms, lip, cheek, and facial muscles in addition to extraordinary control of the diaphragm, back,
stomach, and chest muscles, which respond instantly to the sound the ear hears and the mind interprets.
Music is all things, but most of all, music is Art
It allows a human being to take these dry, technically boring techniques and use them to create emotion. That is one thing science cannot duplicate:
expressivity, feeling, and emotion.
Persons Personal Pitch
Mrs. Persons started the violin at age 8 in the Philadelphia Public School
System. She started private lessons at age 10 with Jean Shook at the Kardon-
Northeast Branch of the Settlement Music School in Philadelphia. She attended
the High School for the Creative and Performing Arts in
central Philadelphia and attended West Chester University where she received
her B.S. Degree in Music Education.

Mrs. Persons likes to listen to the French Impressionist composers -
Claude Debussy, Maurice Ravel, etc. She finds Reverie by Debussy and Ravel's Concerto in G Major for
Piano and Orchestra 2nd movement(Adagio assai) best to listen to when
relaxing.

Mrs. Persons performs in a string quartet called the Shaw Strings
www.shawstrings.com ,in the Chester County Pops Orchestra, and in her church orchestra playing double bass.
She enjoys teaching children and considers it
the best job in the world.

No Stringstar Left Unshined

My goal for the string students of the Avon Grove String Program is to play
their best! Each is unique, but all are important. Like the instruments of
the orchestra we each contribute something to the music of life.
