Mr. Schmell

Technology Education is a curriculum that embraces the technological world around us. It enables students to understand, adapt to, and interact with technology. In middle school, the curriculum exposes students to the meaning of technology, problem solving, measuring, and related area. Students create projects that teach safe working habits, names and uses of common tools, safe machine tool use, project planning and use the technological design process to solve problems.

The seventh grade curriculum is an introductory course designed to provide students with the basic principals relating to production technology, which includes construction, manufacturing, and materials. The students design and construct a project using hand tools, machine basics, as well as, woodworking and metalworking skills.

The eighth grade course is divided into two parts. Part one, Structural Design Challenge, allows students to explore structural engineering. Students design and build a balsa wood tower, which is tested to determine the efficiency. Part two, Communication Technology, teaches the students the copyright laws, fundamentals of design, and visual communication. Activities focus on idea generation and refinement using thumbnail and rough layouts, graphic design, and software to create and manipulate images.
