PARENT INFORMATION

**********************************************************************
2011-2012 School year will see a change in the Phys. Ed. program
for 7th and 8th graders. Those students will now have phys. ed.
every other day for half the year instead of the entire year. The
other half of the year they will have health/wellness. The wellness
center that is part of the Health/Wellness curriculum will still
provide an opportunity for students to be active.
**********************************************************************

Welcome to the Fretz Fitness Factory. We appreciate the opportunity
to share our program with you, to explain our philosophy, goals, and
how we are moving from the once traditional emphasis on sports
performance to the current concept of wellness maintaining a
preventive level of fitness that will help reduce the risk of health
problems later in life due to low levels of fitness (hypokinetic
disorders).

Researchers believe that a comprehensive wellness program is vital
to all aspects of normal growth and development: physical, social,
and emotional. Evidence also suggests that participation in regular
physical activity can enhance learning and improve concentration,
self-control, self-confidence, and self-esteem.

We promote a healthy, positive, life-long attitude towards physical
activity. In keeping with this philosophy, each of our units stress
the following areas:

1. health related fitness/wellness
2. motor skill acquisition
3. affective and cognitive development
4. social and personal skills
5. self and social responsibility

By the time your child leaves Fretz Middle School we want them to be
able to:

1. explain what health related fitness is
2. explain the importance of achieving and maintaining a
minimum
level of health related fitness
3. relate the components of a health related fitness program to
themselves
4. identify activities that suit their likes, abilities, and life
style
5. identify their strengths and weaknesses and list a variety of
appropriate activities to improve weaknesses and maintain/enhance
strengths
6. enjoy and/or develop an appreciation for living

ACTIVITIES

The following is a list of activities, or options, that your child
will be exposed to during their years at Fretz. It is our hope that
they will find at least one activity that they would like to include
in their own wellness plan. As we continue to research current
trends in Wellness we made eliminate or add activites based upon
their appropriateness for this age level.

GRADES

Students grades are based upon the percentage of total points
available for a particular marking period they earn.

1. Skills - skill tests, observations during drills and game
situations. As long as students try their best they cannot score
lower than 70% on skills. Students have the option to retake skills
tests as many times as they like.
2. Knowledge - written/oral tests and application of rules and
strategies in drill and game situations.
3. Homework Assignments - complete, neat, and on time

Assignments and missed tests must be made up within two weeks of
when they were due or students will receive a zero for that
particular assignment or test.

4. Daily Class Grade - students can earn a total of 5 points each
day they have class, broken down as follows:

1 point - change of clothes, shirt and pants
1 point - citizenship; being on time, being respectful
of others, work area, and equipment
3 points - participation and effort

As a safety precaution, students who do not have sneakers may not
participate in class. They earn 0 Daily Class Grade points for that
particular lesson. Students are welcome to borrow sneakers from the
office.

Students who are removed from class for being disruptive will not
earn the 3 points for participation or the 1 point for citizenship.

Students who fail to earn class points for not changing and/or not
participating because of no sneakers can earn those points back, 1
point at a time, by walking during home base or before/after school
for 15 minutes, within 2 weeks of that particular class, or the end
of the marking period, whichever comes first.
