Letter to Parents

September 2, 2009

To Whom It May Concern:

My name is Michele Wisniewski and I will be your child’s mathematics or computer teacher for the upcoming year. This letter is to introduce myself and outline the class expectations. I am optimistic that together we can ensure success this upcoming year. It is very important that students believe they have control over their success and I will emphasize to students that with effort they can achieve anything.

Applied Algebra 1 will focus upon the standards set forth by the department of education. Under the Applied Algebra I links you can find a calender outlining what we have done in class as well as any assignments and quiz or test dates. Focus will be placed on students understanding of the concepts and strategies rather than simply getting an answer. Students will be given frequent feedback of their progress. I believe students should treat failures and mistakes as learning experiences. Students will be allowed 1 week to review the material and retake any quiz or test. Students will have assignments regularly and will be expected to study regularly. In the past many of my students have had ineffective methods of studying mathematics the strategy I model to my students is 1. Copy the problem down 2. Attempt completion 3. Refer to solution for assistance as last resort 4. Review 5. If assistance was used, repeat the problem later until it can be completed independently. Problems are regularly modeled in class and students should first focus on their understanding of these problems before beginning homework. When checking homework, I am focused on the effort students made therefore students must include the steps. Students who may need more support are encouraged to ask for assistance. Students must keep a binder, which will be graded periodically.

Computer Literacy will focus on use of the Microsoft Office software: Excel, Word, Publisher, Powerpoint, and Access. Students also have the option to compete in the Pennsylvania High School Computer Fair. In addition, students will use computerized math lessons to strengthen their skills in the math standards as set forth by the Pennsylvania Department of Education. Finally, students will be introduced to computer programming. The majority of the assignments will be completed in class although if a student is falling behind they can do a 3 page report on technology for extra credit.

I hope I have clearly defined some of the class expectations. Feel free to contact me at 735-7781 or wisniewskim@gnasd.com.
