Applied Algebra 1

Binder

·      You will need to get a binder at least 1.5 inch thick and filler paper by Tuesday, September 8th

·      If for any reason you will not be able to obtain a binder by this time please let me know today or tomorrow after class.

·      Binders MUST  be brought to class on a daily basis and you will receive participation points for doing so.

·      What goes into the binder? Everything

o       Table of contents

§         A list of what is required to be in the binder will be kept on the board in the classroom as well periodically updated online

o       Notes, Assignments, Handouts, Tests and Quizzes

§         Handouts ( including these rules and procedures)

§         Notes and assignments need to be neat and complete

·         Include samples

·         Vocabulary

·         Assignments: on each be sure to have

o       Assignment pg number or title

o       Your name

o       All problems complete

o       All problems must have work shown

o       Open-ended problems must have full descriptions / work

o       Evidence that you corrected your mistakes when we go over the assignment  Problems that are correct are marked, Incorrect problems are corrected

o       Even if you do something wrond you will receive credit for making an effort to understand your mistake

§         Tests and Quizzes when returned

§         PLATO checklists

·      Assessment: Your binder will be checked in the following ways:

o       You will receive credit for bringing it to class EVERY day. First check will be on Tuesday, September 8th.

o       Binders will be collected periodically throughout the marking period and at the end to check for completeness

o       Binder quizzes: announced and unannounced

Textbooks

·      Textbooks will be kept in the classroom at the tables.

·      Textbooks are assigned to table by number so do not exchange books from table to table

·      Keep books in good condition

·      At home

o       The full textbook is available online. We will be setting up your online access next week. Instructions for accessing the online version will also be found on my webpage

o       If you do not have a computer or internet access at home you can sign out a book which must be returned by the end of the year.

 

Procedures

  • Upon entering class, take a daily startup problem and complete showing your work
  • Check the board for important information
    • What will be done in class, seating, materials that should be in your container, etc.
  • Check your table container for the materials listed and be sure to report and missing / damaged items:
  • Prepare yourself for class be sure you have a writing instrument, Pencil is preferred be sure it is sharpened. Pen may be used no red or light colors, paper, etc.
  • Calculators:
    • While there are some calculators available it is highly recommended that you purchase your own basic or scientific calculator that can be used. I cannot guarantee that classroom calculator will be available for your use    
  • Come to class willing and ready to learn.
    • Class time is for MATH giving 100% in class will reduce the amount of outside work you will be given as well as the number of quizzes you have
  • Keep volume level low
    • If volume level is too high I will signal by raising my hand and stating volume level down  it is expected that you will bring the volume down
    • I know when students are working in groups  volume may go up unintentionally please make your best effort to kepp the level low and to respond promptly if I indicate the volume is to high consequence may include additional assignments, disciplinary referrals, and/  or point deductions.
  • Work to the best of your ability
    • While math might not be a favorite subject of yours I expect that you will give it your best try and learn as much as you can. Without math you would not have many of the things you have today cell phones, GPS, etc so even if you don’t like it respect it enough to give it your best.
  • Leaving the room
    • Make sure you have a pass and have signed out correctly
    • Requests to go to the restroom are to be made during the first 5 minutes
    • Do not disrupt class while leaving or returning
    • Do not abuse this privilege.
      • Limit outings  to 2 times per week, Limit trips to approximately 5 minutes and no longer that 10
      • Unless it is an extreme emergency, Do not ask during instruction!
    • Failure to follow the above may result in; Parental Notification, The loss of using the pass for a week or longer, detention, restricted hall movement through the office, and / or a deduction of points (you can’t participate if you’re not in the room)
    • If you have any medical conditions that require more frequent restroom visits please let me know before or after class.
  • During Instruction
    • Stay in your seat
    • Raise your hand to answer questions and participate
    • Be respectful of others
    • Be sure to stop me if you have a question I am more than willing to help you any way I can but you must let me know what you do not understand so we can find a way to help you understand.
    • Be attentive. Take notes. Correct mistakes on assignments
  • After instruction
    • Begin activity or assignment
    • Work quietly: Keep Volume Low  ALWAYS USE "INSIDE VOICES"
      • Focus on math
    • Ask any questions you were unable to ask during instruction
  • After class / At home
    • Review what was done in class
    • Redo example problems
    • Complete assignments
    • Make notes of any problems or questions you have be sure to ask the next day

Offensive Behavior

Offensive behaviors including profanity, obscene gestures and remarks will not be tolerated and will result in disciplinary action which may include receiving a citation.  

Grading

Your grading will be based upon your mastery of Pennsylvania State Anchors which can be viewed on the Pennsylvania Department of Education's website as well as on my website checklist Your mastery will be evaluated in many ways including but not limited to:

  • Tests (approximately 200 points each) and Quizzes (approximately 100 points each)
    • You can earn 5 points on the test or quiz by having it signed by a parent
    • You may retake any quiz or test during study hall, activity period, or 7th period
      • Retakes must be scheduled within 1 week of the original quiz date.
      • Unannounced quizzes will be used on occasion but the majority of quizzes will be announced
  • Other Tests : School wide tests such as the foresight tests will be counted
  • Binder  as described above.
    • Assignments will be given point value based on their depth and length and will be around 50 points each
  • Online activities including Plato (100 points each)
  • Projects such as reports, posters, etc. points will vary based on the project
  • Your grade will be greatly influenced by your willingness to try your best and keep working towards mastery of the math anchors; therefore the following will also influence your grade:
  • Behavior / Participation
    • Includes conducting yourself appropriately while in class, coming on time, being attentive, etc
    • Contributing to class in a POSITIVE manner Everyday
  • Extra credit
    • There will some opportunities given throughout the marking period.
    • You may receive up to 10 points each week of extra credit on their notebook grade by completing extra problems from the section and/ or completing more problems in the open ended style

I would like you to learn as much as you can. Your goal should be to leave this class knowing more mathematics then when you started. You will not learn if you try to pass off others’ work as your own

  • Plagiarism, cheating, copying, etc will result in a deduction of 5 points from the students average for each offense

1. Why would it be disrespectful to others to not do this (for example if you did not return an item you borrowed)?
