Here are a few suggestions of how you can help your child at home:
In Kindergarten, the students are expected to know and recognize ALL the alphabet letters. We are learning to recognize the letters, write them and learn the sounds they make. You can help your child practice all the alphabet letters at home as you are reading or by pointing out things that start or end with these sounds. You could also make flashcards and review them each night. When practicing with your child make sure the letters are in random order; not alphabetical.
When practicing beginning/ending sounds you could say a word and ask what the beginning/ending sound is. (Example: mop...what sound does "mop" begin with?)
Read to your child 15 -20 minutes each day/night. After reading ask your child to retell the story. Also practice what happens at the beginning, middle and end of the story.
Fine Motor Skills (holding a pencil, writing their first and last name, and
cutting with scissors)
You can also help your child with counting the numbers from 1-20, writing the numbers, and reading the numbers. You can have them count items to a certain number and ask them to write the number. For example: count 13 pennies together and then ask them to write the #13 emphasizing what numbers we write to make 13. You can also help them find patterns and sort objects using things at home.
Word Wall Words: We have been adding sight words to our word wall. You can find a list of these sight words on the "Word Wall" section of my website! Please help your child with these words as you are reading stories at home. You can also make flash cards with sight words and review a couple each night. They should be able to identify them by themselves. We will continue adding words to our word wall.
