Below is what the first grade students have started to do......
Math: We are in the middle of chapter 2: Investigating addition and
subtraction in different ways. We are learning to write number sentences and
find clue words to add and subtract in number stories. We are also exploring
writing in vertical and horizontal form! We are continuing to put many "Math
vocabulary" words on our math tree and learning ways to
problem solve.
Parents....try as much as possible to incorporate making number sentences
when you are working with your child. Also praftice adding and subtracting.
Every bit helps!
Religion: We on in the middle of chapter 3: God's Word Teaches Us Many
Things. We have been talking about different ways to learn through the
senses. We are learning about the Bible story: The Storm at Sea. We even
painted our own rendition of this Bible story. Our Saint this week is St.
Augustine.
Science: The first grade children have wrapped up the seed cycle through the
seasons. We are now moving towards "Living and Non-Living" things. We will be
going on a search around the Mary garden to investigate. We will be creating
many different items including Living Things Magnigfying Glasses and murals.
Of course....it will be displayed in the hallways and in the room. I will
send all their things home for you to see too!
We love to learn through hands on lessons!
Social Studies: We are learning all about Christopher Columbus and his
voyage. We are reading many neat books including In 1492 by Jean Marzolla. We
learned a fun song too!
ILA: We are continuing short vowels. We are working with the short o sound.
Our Story is called The Big Blue Ox. We are working with story elements
(Beginning/Middle/End) and used the book Corduroy by Don Freeman to
demonstrate this.
So much to learn
So much to see
First grade is the place to be!!!!!!!!!!!!!
