Welcome to our Art and Technology Classes

                                             ART CLASS

Grade 1 to Grade 5 students
Don't forget to bring back those old painting cover shirts.

KINDERGARTEN: students are identifying circles, squares, triangles, and
rectangles as lines joined in different ways to create a chalk monster. Their
inspiration came from reading the book, "Where the Wild Things Are" and
watching that video from the Discovery Ed website.

GRADE ONE: the students are illustrating their understanding of foreground,
background and middle ground in art. They listened to the story of "The Barn
Dance" and actual barn dance music to brainstorm ideas for their artwork.

GRADE TWO and GRADE THREE: "Zebras in Design" is the topic of these students'
artwork. They are using lines, stripes, dots, etc as design elements to
create patterns. Soon they will begin a lesson on mosaics.

GRADE FOUR: the students are continuing their study of Alexander Calder.
Technology as well as Art skills will be part of their activities to create a
three-dimensional mobile.

GRADE FIVE: a simple print making technique called collograph is being used
to illustrate artwork with atmosphere and texture. The topic is a haunted
garden, just in time for Halloween.

GRADE SIX: the students have been introduced to the artwork of Georgia
O'Keeffe. Through as study of her artwork the students will create a piece of
abstract art from an object in nature using glue and oil pastels.

GRADE SEVEN: as an introduction to Tessellations the students are exploring
the use of symmetry. They will watch a video from Discovery Education called
The Mathematical Eye. The each will create a paper composition to illustrate
the magic of one-half.

GRADE EIGHT: we will began a study of Pop Art with a video from the Discovery
Education website. Wayne Thiebald is our first artist to explore with Pop
Art. To illustrate their ability to recognize and expand their understanding
of Pop Art, each student will be creating a paper mache cake.

                                           TECHNOLOGY

Technology classes will focus on updating passwords and account information,
setting up folders for various academic subjects, adding printers and
reviewing proper keyboarding techniques. Internet safety rules and procedures
will also be emphasized this week and throughout the school year.

KINDERGARTEN: the students are learning many new computer terms. They are
also practicing to scroll to and open/close MS Paint program.

GRADE ONE: students have been learning to Log On to Student Account. We will
be using some of our keyboarding skills in Microsoft Word to type and print a
title for their barn dance artwork.

GRADE TWO: students are reviewing the use of the proper techniques for
keyboarding. We are still focusing on identification and typing
the correct keys on the entire keyboard. We also have been typing in Microsoft
Word to create list of Halloween words. One of our favorite tools has Word
Art. Check out the Links page for Dance Mat Typing.

GRADE THREE: the students are learning to create a list with bullets in MS
Word to review the mysteries of the rosary. They have been formatting the
font, size and style. One of their favorite tools is creating a page border.
The students have created their own folders to save their work.

GRADE FOUR: students are creating a post card on the computer. The post card
was first drafted in their ILA class. In computer class each student will
type the proper format of a post card by working on a pre-made template. When
it is finished the post card will be printed. The students will then hand
create the illustration.

GRADE FIVE: students are working on a keyboarding exercise in Microsoft Word
to create a table of the US states, capital cities and abbreviations. We are
also starting an introduction the use of formulas in a spreadsheet using
Microsoft Excel.

GRADE SIX: "What Would Halloween be Like Without the Ecuadorian Rainforest?"
is the title of our present activity. The students have been researching in a
group to list Rainforest Treats and Temperate Treats. On the Smart Board they
will share the results with the rest of class. They will then record on a
spreadsheet which popular Halloween Treats need ingredients from the
Rainforest and Temperate regions of the earth and which treat is the most
popular. They will use column graphs to illustrate the results. As the final
summary they will use the Smart Board to present their findings to the class.

GRADE SEVEN: back by popular demand for this year is the Fast Food Fun -
Nutrition Data - Do you know what you eat? This exercise integrates science,
health, physical education as well as art and technology. The students will
use a spreadsheet to enter, format, manipulate data, formulas, and functions.
Create various types of chart to analyze data. Summarize results to
incorporate data and charts in a word document. And finally present their
findings on the Smart Board to the class.

GRADE EIGHT: the students will be working on a favorite topic - cell phones.
During this activity they will be researching available local plans for
purchasing a cell phone. Using a spreadsheet program to create a comparison
chart that is complete with formulas for calculating total costs.
Identifying new and cutting-edge cell phone technologies, and writing a brief
report listing the pros and cons (both personal and work related) for having a
cell phone handset with those features. Their findings will be presented to
the class using the Smart Board.
