How often do we have Library class?

Each grade attends Library class once each week. Students are welcome to use
the library at other times for research and for borrowing books, but they must
have teacher permission to come to the library at non-scheduled times.

What do students do during Library class?

During Library time, students learn to find their way around the library.
They learn about award-winning authors and illustrators and the difference
between fiction and non-fiction books. They learn how to search for books
using the online catalog, and they learn how to carry out research, using
books, periodicals, and internet resources.

Do we receive a grade for library activities and projects?

Yes. Library work is graded and included in the ILA grade.

How many books are we allowed to borrow at one time?

The number depends on your grade level. Kindergarten and First Graders are
usually permitted to borrow one book at a time. By the time you reach Eighth
Grade, you are usually allowed a maximum of 5 books at a time. Exceptions are
made for special circumstances, such as the need to use books to complete
projects.

How long may we keep out a library book?

Grades K through 3 usually borrow books for 1 week. Grades 4 through 8
usually borrow books for 2 weeks. Books may always be renewed as long as
there is no reserve on them.

What does "reserve" mean?

When you reserve a book, you put your name on a list of people waiting to
borrow that book. This sometimes becomes necessary with very popular books.

Are we allowed to talk in the library?

Everyone is asked to talk in a "whisper voice" and only when necessary. This
is to show respect for those nearby who may be reading or studying.

Are we allowed to borrow reference books?

When needed for a homework assignment, reference books may be borrowed
overnight. They must be returned in the morning on the day after they are
borrowed. If reference books are returned later in the day, a fine of 50
cents is owed
for that day.

Is there a fine for overdue books?

A fine of 5 cents per day is owed for overdue fiction and non-fiction books
and periodicals. The fine for overdue reference books is 50 cents per day.
Fines are not collected for weekends, holidays or sick days, but if you are
absent, library books are due on the day you return to school, not your next
library day.

Are we allowed to borrow from the video collection?

No. Our video library is for the use of teachers who wish to enrich their
lessons with these resources.

We have classroom rules of behavior. Are there "library rules"?

The same rules that apply in your classroom apply in the library. We must
treat each other with respect and always work to do our best work. Remember:
"Academic Excellence and Mutual Respect, All in the Name of Christ."
