What do I do when my child is absent?

Send in a written excuse whenever your child returns to school.
The excuse should include your child's name, the reason for
absence (illness), the date(s) missed, and your signature. We
will save missed work for your child and give it to them upon
their return. They will have enough time to complete it and
return once they have recovered.

What do I need to label?

Please label all of your child's supplies, including lunch boxes,
jackets, coats, hats, and gloves.

How can I help my child learn math facts?

You can help your child by giving him/her daily practice in math
facts using flashcards, computer programs, electronic toys, or
using oral questions. One easy time for busy parents to practice
facts with their children is in the car driving to and from
activities and errands.

Where should I keep my child's bus pass?

Your child's bus pass should always be kept in the backpack. If
a substitute bus driver needs information, the driver needs to be
able to check your child's bus pass.

What does my child need for gym?

Sneakers should always be worn on gym days. Your child should
wear loose fitting clothes that allow a lot of movement and
flexibility. Jeans are not recommended. First graders do not
change for gym.

What shoes should my child wear to school?

Please consider safety and comfort. Many sandals such as flip
flops and slides are not safe for climbing on monkeybars and
other playground equipment. Also our rooms are cold. Students
wearing socks and shoes are usually more comfortable than those
students with bare toes.

How can my child celebrate his/her birthday in school?

Your child may bring in a simple birthday treat to share with the
class. Please keep it easy to pass out and quick to eat. Napkins
are appreciated, but do not send in treat bags or drink boxes.

What if my family has a vacation planned?

Contact the office for a vacation request form BEFORE your trip.
A maximum of five vacation days per year will be approved. This
includes days before and after holiday vacations.

When is lunch money due?

With our new system, you may deposit money in your child's
school lunch account on any day of school. Send lunch money in a
sealed envelope marked with your child's name and the
words "lunch money" on the outside of the envelope. Teachers
will send the sealed envelopes to the kitchen. You will
be notified when your child's lunch account balance is low.

Does my child need to be able to spell the reading words?

First graders study two lists of words each week -- high
frequency words (reading) and spelling words. The students need
to be able to read both lists, but they only need to be able to
spell the words on the spelling word list.

What if I need to change my child's transportation after school?

All changes need to be in writing. Please send a note letting us
know if you are going to pick up your child. Please include the
date of the change. If your child will take a different bus,
please send a note telling us which bus your child will need to
take and on which date. Mrs. Humlan can issue a one-day bus pass
for your child to ride a different bus.
