Homework

   One of the goals of first grade is to learn organizational skills. 
Completing and returning homework on time is an important step toward that 
goal.  Your child will need one pocket folder for a "Home Folder." Your 
child will bring home his/her Home Folder each day and it must be returned 
to school each day. This Home Folder will be one of our main means of 
communication.  Any notes or forms for the office or teachers should be put 
in the Home Folder.

   Please set aside a special place and time for homework.  Review the 
directions with your child and encourage your child to complete the work as 
independently as possible.  

   If your child has trouble, try to give a hint or clue before giving your 
child the correct answer.  We want to help your child learn persistence 
and to keep trying, even if the answer doesn't immediately pop into his/her 
head. Only offer as much help as needed. If your child has great difficulty 
with any homework assignment, please add a note notifying the teacher. 
 
  Each week a Family Times activity page and Reading Homework page will be 
sent home. Each day help your child do one activity from the Family Times 
and practice reading the words and phrases on the homework paper. One of the 
most valuable ways to improve your child's reading is repeated readings of 
phrases, sentences, and even stories. The more your child reads the homework 
phrases and sentences, the smoother his/her reading will become. Just like 
learning to kick a soccer ball, practice, practice, practice.
 
  Look at the "Home Activity"  suggested on the bottom of the 
Harcourt math page to review what is being taught each day and find 
ways to promote math at home. Cooking and playing cards and board games all 
help children with math.
