First graders are working on Chapter 7: Subtraction Strategies. All
students need to memorize the subtractions facts from 10 on down. Chapter 7
presents strategies to help students subtract quickly and efficiently.
Students can't rely on using their fingers. It is too time consuming and
leads to many mistakes.
Students will learn to count back 1, 2, or 3 on a number line. lTLhey will
learn to use related addition and subtraction facts. For example, if
2 + 3 = 5, then 5 - 2 = 3.
Students will gain proficiency in using the problem-solving
strategy "write a number sentence."
You can help at home by giving your child subtraction facts practice. You
can use flashcards or the link on the first grade web site "That's A Fact."
It is the very last link on the list. It is designed for beginners. Your
child can choose to be timed or not timed as he/she practices. Your at home
help is crucial to your child learning to memorize the subtraction facts.
