Math

First graders are working on Chapter 5: Addition Strategies. All students
need to memorize the addition facts to at least sums of 10. Chapter 5
presents strategies to help students add quickly and efficiently. Students
can't rely on using their fingers. It is too time consuming and leads to
many mistakes. Students will learn to count on from the larger number. For
example, 8 + 2, students will say 8 and count on two more numbers for 8, 9,
10 to get the sum. Students will use "doubles" and then "doubles plus 1."
For example, 4 + 4 = 8 so, 4 + 5 = 8 + 1, or 9.
You can help at home by giving your child addition facts practice. You
can use flashcards or the link on the first grade web site "That's A Fact."
It is the very last link on the list. It is designed for beginners. Your
child can choose to be timed or not timed as he/she practices. Your at home
help is crucial to your child learning to memorize the addition facts.
