FAQFrequently Asked Questions: This page contains answers to common questions of students and parents.
Students can receive extra credit in only two ways, homework and class participation. Homemwork - At the end of the quarter, homework will count as a test grade on a basis of 100 points. For example, if 20 homework assignments are given during a quarter, each assignment would be worth 5 points. If a student completed 18 assignments, her homework grade would be 90; if she completed them all, she would get a homework grade of 100. Class Policy - At the end of each quarter, adhering to class policy will count as a test grade on a basis of 100 points. A student will lose five points for each infraction in the following areas:(1) not having required books/materials; (2) not focusing on work in class/computer lab; (3) disrupting teacher or classmates; (4) not promptly returning forms requiring parental signature; (5) not keeping materials on desk until the end of class. These are the only extra-credit opportunities. How many tests and quizzes will there be each quarter? By the end of the quarter, each student will have at least eight grades, which includes tests and quizzes. If I turn in a project late, how many points will I lose? All projects may be submitted on or before the due date. If the project is not submitted by the due date, the student will lose three rubric points from the 15-point rubric (one letter grade) for each of the first three days the project is late. If the project is not submitted by the fourth day, the student will receive a grade of zero. What if I'm absent when a homework assignment is due? If a student is absent on the day an assignment is due, she must submit the assignment on her first day back to school. All of the homework due dates will be posted on the monthly calendar. Every student is responsible for completing every homework assignment, no exceptions. What happens to a student who copies another student's homework? If students copy homework, both students - the one who provided the homework and the one who copied it - will lose three homework grades. If I leave my book in my locker, will I be able to get it? According to school policy, students may not go to their lockers during class. If a student does not have her book, she will lose five points from her class participation grade. How many report cards will I get during the school year? Four report cards are issued during the school year. Also, at the end of each of the first three quarters, there will be parent/teacher conferences. Conferences are mandatory if a student fails a subject. Is there standardized testing during the school year? During freshman and sophomore years, students will be required to take the PSAT (October) and the TerraNova (March). All freshmen will take a standardized reading test early in the school year. Will I ever have to get test or quiz papers signed by my parents? Students will be required to have failing test and quiz grades signed by their parents and returned the following day. This will keep parents up-to-date on the progress of their daughters. What happens if I lose a book? There will be a $10 fee to replace a lost vocabulary book. The cost to replace a lost textbook is about $60. If a student loses a paperback, she must purchase a replacement copy. If I'm not doing well in class, where can I get help? Juniors and seniors in the National Honor Society (NHS) provide free tutoring every morning before school in the cafeteria and every Wednesday after school in a classroom. A student who requires NHS tutoring does not need an appointment. If a student does receive tutoring, the subject teacher will be notified. Will there be homework on weekends? All assignments will appear on the monthly calendar, so students may work on them in advance of the due date. There will be times when homework is due on Mondays. On what days will I be tested or quizzed? Tests and quizzes can be given any day of the school week. Many literature and grammar quizzes are unannounced, so it is important for students to study every night, even if there is no written homework. What is the penalty for cheating on a test or quiz? A student caught cheating on a test or quiz will receive a grade of zero and her parents will be notified. Is there a penalty for plagiarism? If a student submits a plagiarized paper, she will receive a grade of zero and her parents will be notified. |
