Course Outline small medium large Each student receives two copies of the course outline at the beginning of the school year. One copy is signed by the student and a parent, and then returned to the teacher. The second copy remains in the student's English folder so she is able to refer to it during the school year. If you have any questions about the classroom regulations, please contact Mr. Ronzoni. <b>COURSE OUTLINE - ALL TRACKS</b> <i>TESTING POLICY</i> Students will be notified of tests and vocabulary quizzes at least five days in advance; tests and quizzes are also listed on the class calendar. When a student misses a test or a quiz, she will take the retest on the day she returns to school. If circumstances prevent giving the retest during class time, the student and teacher will make other arrangements. Any student caught cheating on a test will get a grade of zero. In vocabulary quizzes, all words must be spelled correctly. Students will be tested at least four times each quarter and quizzed at least three times each quarter. <i>Some tests and quizzes will be timed</i>. <i>HOMEWORK POLICY</i> Homework assignments are an integral part of the grade; therefore, every student must complete every assignment. All assignments must be completed on standard size looseleaf, not torn from a spiral book. Homework may not be typed. Students will receive no credit for illegible or incomplete homework. At the end of the quarter, homework will count as a weighted test grade on a basis of 100 points. For example, if 20 homework assignments are given during a quarter, each assignment would be worth 5 points. Then if a student completed 16 assignments, her homework grade would be 80. If homework is copied, all students involved will lose 20 points from their class policy grades. <i>CLASS POLICY</i> At the end of the quarter, students will receive a test grade based on adhering to the elements of class policy. A student will lose five points for each infraction in the following areas: ● not having required books/materials ● not focusing on work in class/computer lab ● disrupting teacher or classmates ● not promptly returning forms requiring parental signature (-5 points for every day late) ● not keeping required materials on desk until the end of class ● Copying homework will result in a deduction of 20 points from the class policy grade. <i>SPECIAL INFORMATION</i> ● Students will receive a monthly calendar. ● Reports, writing assignments, and projects count as test grades. ● Some literature and grammar quizzes are unannounced; students should review all classwork nightly. ● Students may not use the restroom during the class following their lunch periods. ● All books are provided free-of-charge and must be covered. Students must pay for lost or damaged books. ● Every day, students must have an English copybook, English folder, vocabulary book, pens, #2 pencils, and class calendar. Water bottles, food, cell phones, and iPod/MP3 players are not allowed in class and will be confiscated and sent to Student Services. ● Students and parents should monitor GradeConnect. We will review all tests. Students will get to keep graded answer sheets, but they will not keep test questions. ● Any student who is late for class must have a note from the teacher who detained her. ● Any student caught doing an assignment for another class will lose ten points from her class policy grade, and the assignment be given to that teacher. ● There is no extra-credit work and no retests. Please do not ask. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ <B>COURSE OUTLINE - ENGLISH 251 AND 252</B> <I>Content</I> The content for this college preparatory course will include the following: ● short stories ● how to read and analyze literature ● literary terms and application of these terms to short stories, novels, and plays ● novels and plays, including: <i>Fever 1793, Camelot, Romeo and Juliet, A Separate Peace, The Mysterious Affair at Styles, Harvey</i> ● poetry study ● Internet skills; study skills; test-taking skills (including essay tests); group work skills ● writing skills ● learning grammar, both through handouts and through writing ● vocabulary study, both through a textbook and through literature ● preparation for PSAT and SAT <I>Goals</I> The goals of this class are for the student to: ● develop skills necessary to analyze works of literature ● increase reading comprehension ● develop an appreciation for different forms of literature ● acquire the ability to use the library and the Internet as a source of reference in all subject areas ● sharpen study skills and test-taking skills, and apply these skills to all subject areas ● express an understanding of literature through writing and be able to communicate effectively through letter writing ● learn the correct form for answering essay questions ● learn grammar and usage through application of rules to writing ● increase vocabulary through systematic study ● improve scores on standardized tests <I>Skill Objectives</I> By the end of the school year, the student will be able to: ● analyze works of literature ● comprehend works of literature ● use the school library and Internet for all subject areas ● feel comfortable when studying and taking tests in all subject areas ● write effectively ● understand and apply rules of grammar and usage to all subject areas ● answer essay questions in all subject areas ● use words learned in vocabulary study in speaking and writing ● know the techniques necessary to perform well on standardized tests ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- <B>COURSE OUTLINE - ENGLISH 253</B> <I>Content</I> The content for this course will include the following: ● short stories, poems, and plays from the text and from handouts ● how to read and analyze literature ● literary terms and application of these terms to short stories, novels, and plays ● novels and plays, including: <i>Miracle on 34th Street, Romeo and Juliet, Little Women, Summer of My German Soldier, After the Rain</i> ● Internet skills; study skills; test-taking skills; group work skills ● writing skills, including: writing about literature, multi-paragraph essays; learning grammar, both through handouts and through writing ● vocabulary study, both through a textbook and through literature ● preparation for the PSAT and SAT <I>Goals</I> The goals of this class are for the student to: ● develop skills necessary to read and analyze works of literature ● increase reading comprehension ● develop an appreciation for different forms of literature ● increase reading proficiency ● acquire an understanding of and the ability to use the library and the Internet as a source of reference in all subject areas ● sharpen study skills and test-taking skills, and apply these skills to all subject areas ● express an understanding of literature through writing and be able to communicate effectively through personal essays ● increase vocabulary through systematic study <I>Skill Objectives</I> By the end of the school year, the student will be able to: ● analyze works of literature ● comprehend works of literature ● use the school library and Internet for all subject areas ● feel comfortable when studying and taking tests in all subject areas ● write effectively ● understand and apply rules of grammar and usage to all subject areas ● answer essay questions in all subject areas ● use words learned in vocabulary study in speaking and writing ● know the techniques necessary to perform well on standardized tests Automatically clean input to optimize for the web.
