The 8th grade gifted exploratory classes have completed the "Exploration
Game." Unfortunately, no one was able to find the City of Gold, get the gold
and safely return. Two crews, The Golden Oak and The Isabelle, actually
located the City but experienced serious difficulties while attempting to
retrieve the treasure. Others decided it was too risky to continue and sailed
to their home port city. All crews were successful in revising their nautical
charts and in gathering new information about the previously unknown world.
Their next project is to complete a unit on rocketry. Students will select a
topic, either rocket history, rocket math or rocket physics, and prepare a 10
minute multi-media presentation. During the last week of October, they will
present their work to the gifted students at Nazareth Intermediate School.
Students will also build a small, model rocket and launch it during the same
week.
Grade 7 classes recently finished the "Great Andoranian Flight Race." The
first place winners were Sydney and Mikki with team Crazy Yellow Alpacas.
Upon their arrival in Morgan Town, large crowds greeted them with cheering
and applause. They made a short speech and thanked all those who assisted
them in the race. The Alpacas completed the race in a time of 1 hour, 37
minutes and 41 seconds in their Beechcraft Baron. Second place finishers were
Nelson and Moyin with team Vega. They actually arrived in Morgan Town prior
to the Alpaca team with a time of 37 minutes and 29 seconds, but failed to
put down their landing gear and suffered major damage to their aircraft, the
Mooney Bravo. Race rules require a safe landing with no significant plane
damage. Congratulations to all who participated.
Their next unit will focus on the "green" technologies used by our new Middle
School.
