About The Teacher
School Nurses in every community touch the lives of children by addressing their health needs while in school. It is the goal of every School Nurse for children to enter the classroom in optimal health and ready to learn. When children miss school due to illness and other factors they are excluded from the learning process. The presence of a School Nurse in the school setting assures the management and attention to health conditions such as: asthma, diabetes, violence, depression, allergies, poor dietary habits, and other current day problems. School Nurses also serve on the front line of defense for identification of vision, hearing and growth abnormalitities, communicable disease and mental health conditions, which can be treated more effectively with early intervention. In addition, the School Nurse provides health information/health counseling. (NASN-National Associaiton of School Nurses) A School Nurse or Associate Nurse is available each day in the school full time.

Click on the link on the left to see the new State Mandates for 2009-2010 school year All students entering school for the first time must be fully immunized as a condition of school attendance. The following immunizations are required: * Diphtheria and Tetanus - Four or more properly spaced doses of DTP, DTaP, Td or DT, or any combination of the three with 1 dose administered on or after the fourth birthday. * Polio - Three or more properly spaced doses of polio vaccine. (Inactivated Polio Vaccine or Oral Polio Vaccine). * Measles (Rubeola)-Two properly spaced doses of live attenuated measles containing vaccine (preferably (MMRII) with the first dose administered at 12 months of age or older, or measles immunity proved by serological evidence determined by the hemagglutination inhibition (HI) test or any comparable test. * German Measles (Rubella) - One dose of live attenuated rubella containing vaccine (preferably MMRII) administered at 12 months of age or older, or rubella immunity proved by serological evidence determined by the hemagglutination inhibition (HI) test or any comparable test. * Mumps - One dose of live attenuated mumps containing vaccine (preferably MMRII) administered at 12 months of age or older, or a physician diagnosis of mumps disease indicated by a written record signed by a physician or his/her designee. * Hepatitis B -Three properly spaced doses of hepatitis B vaccine. (Currently the medical recommendation is that the second dose of hepatitis B vaccine be separated by at least one month after the first dose and the third dose is separated by at least 4 months after the first dose and at least 2 months after the second dose.) * Varicella - One dose of live attenuated varicella vaccine administered at 12 months of age or older, or chickenpox immunity proved by laboratory testing, or a written statement of history of chickenpox disease from parent, guardian or physician. A physical examination is required upon original entry into school and again in 6th and 11th grades. A dental examination is required upon original entry into school and again in 3rd and 7th grades.
