The Second Grade will have a Science class once a week. This is not a formally graded class, however, the students are expected to be active participants and compete all assignments. The work done during the Science period will count towards the students' Effort and Behavior Grades on the Second Grade Report Card.

The Science class will focus on several units of study such as: Life Cycles of Plants and Animals, Animal Habitats, Weather, The Sun and the Moon, and Dinosaurs.

I am also excited to begin implementing a Traveling Scientist component to our Science class this year. Each week one student will be chosen to take home the Traveling Scientist Bag. Inside the bag will be a book of children's experiments and the Traveling Scientist Forms and equipment. The student will choose one experiment to do at home. He/She will then fill out the lab report and write about their findings. When the students return to school they will conduct the experiment for the class and show how they found their results. This activity will introduce students to the Scientific Method while allowing them to use higher level thinking to solve problems, practice writing skills, and practice speaking and listening skills. I am sure the students will have a great deal of fun with this project and learn a great deal as well!!
