Math Vocabulary

This is where you will find the math vocabulary we are working with as we progress through our chapters.  A copy will be glued into your child's Math Journal.  The students should know these terms and how to apply them to mathematics. They will be tested on their knowledge of these terms.

Math Vocabulary Chapter 1

1. Plus Sign- (+) a sign used to show addition

2. Minus Sign: (-) a sign used to show subtaction

3. Add: to find how many altogether

4. Sum: the answer in addition\

5.Addition: a number sentence with the symbols + and =

6.Addend: a number you add

7. Count on: to name numbers in increasing order

8. Subtract: to take away some from a group and find how many are left using the symbols - and =

9. Difference: the answer in subtraction

10. Count back: to name numbers in decreasing order

11. Fact Family: the set of all related facts for a group of numbers; usually two addition sentences and two subtraction sentences

12. Missing addend: is an addend not given in an addition sentence

13. Pattern rules: a pattern among a group of numbers or figures

14. Doubles fact: a fact with two addends that are the same
