About The Teacher
I have been teaching at Pen Ryn for thirty-two years but it seems as if only yesterday that I began teaching at our school. Early on in my career at Pen Ryn, I began to develop what I call Character Education. This was my way of incorporating fun into my lesson plans to help students with their writing. Some of my favorite characters include: Norb- a half noun half verb clown who teaches grammar; Ruth, the storyteller; Wraysan, an Asian theme character; and Dancing Deer, my Native American personna. Sherlock Holmes joins the class for at least 6 classroom mysteries. Students work in teams to solve these mysteries and everyone gets to be a suspect! This year Dorothy, Glinda, The Tin Man, Scarecrow, and the Lion will join the class as we explore the theme the Wizard of OZ. We will be making many comparisons to literary genres. When I'm not teaching I like to stay busy. I have two wonderful daughters Tiffiny and Tara, a fine son-in-law Mitchell, and my dream dog Cocker Spaniel, Austin. I love to read, garden, dance, shop, and go to church. I am proud to have a loving family, good friends, and terrific Pen Ryn students.
Mission Label:
Mission
As a teacher,it is my job to foster a climate in which effort leads to achievement. I continually work at structuring an environment where students feel that they are cared for and are safe to take risks as learners. One of my goals is to foster an attitude of thinking that will encourage students to be life long learners. Hopefully, everyone will pick up my love of reading and writing. Through literature circles and written responses we will share our feelings and know the power that is in the written word. Integrating oral presentations, art, dramatics and other activities will help students reflect upon and extend their learning. I am willing to share and reflect with my students. Together, we will celebrate learning.
