Welcome back.
We are going to have a wonderful year!
Helpful Information About Our Year!
Topics We Will Study
Some of the subjects we will be covering will be:
- plants and animals native to Pennsylvania
- weather
- Famous people from Pennsylvania
- Local places of interest
- Our community
- Symbols of our country
If any of our parents or grandparents have a special interest in any
of the above topics and would like to come in and share with our children,
please let me know so we can set up a time. We love to have visitors.
Homework
Homework will be sent home on Mondays and due back at the end of the
week. It is important to establish a homework routine. Please provide them
with a place and time to do their homework each night. This is a life-long
skill that will help your child throughout their school years.
Daily Folders
The purple folders marked Boomerang Folder will come home each
night. Please check it for any school notes and clean out all old papers
each night. You can use this folder to send in absentee notes, permission
slips, pick-up slips, or any other types of mail to come to the school. I
will be checking these folders each morning. It is your child’s
responsibility to bring this folder to school everyday.
Absentee Notes
Each day that your child misses school they must return with a note
stating why they were absent. The school is under strict guidelines that
students must turn in a note within 3 days of the absent day or the missed
day will be marked as an illegal absence.
Birthdays
We celebrate birthdays in second grade. If you would like to send
in a healthy birthday treat just let me know a day or two in advance. That
way we won’t have multiple celebrations on the same day.
Lunch Money
Please send all lunch money in a Ziploc baggie or an envelope with
your child’s name on it. (Loose money often gets lost on the bus or on the
way to the room.) Students will be sent to the cafeteria in the morning to
put their money into their account.
Book Orders
I will be sending book orders home each month. Please do not feel
obligated to order. I offer these as an inexpensive way to build your
child’s home library. Scholastic offers a wonderful variety of books at an
affordable price. If you wish to place a book order, please send in checks
only, made payable to SCHOLASTIC BOOK CLUB. Please fill out the entire
order form. These books also make great birthday and holiday gifts. If you
would like to place a gift order, place the order form in an envelope with a
note letting me know to hold it for you. When your order comes in, I will
contact you and you can pick your order up in the office.
Star of the Week
Students are given a number at the beginning of the year. This
number will be used to determine who is our Star of the Week. When it is
your child's turn to be the STAR they will have a paper to color and share
that tells all about them. This will be their special week.
Clearances
I love to have helpers in my room. The students love it too. All
helpers who are working with children one-on-one or individually must have
clearances. This is an easy thing to do, it just takes some time. The
district office has the forms and I think it cost around ten dollars. Your
clearances are good with the district throughout your child’s school years
as long as you come in at least once a year. You must have these if you
want to volunteer for chaperoning a field trip. We require this for your
child’s safety.
Contacting the Me
For your child to have the best experience possible this year we
need to team together and help each other out. I will send home monthly
newsletters and keep information posted on my website. I will also send
home small reminders of special events.
If there is a problem at school I will call you as soon as I can so that we
can discuss it before it gets worse.
Please contact me with any issues or concerns you might have about
your child. Sometimes things happen at home that the child does not feel
comfortable talking about but nevertheless they are not themselves that
day. (Loss of a pet, up sick during the night, grandparent in the hospital,
etc.) Send in a note for my eyes only and I will be able to keep an eye on
them if they need some quiet time.
