Classroom Update

Dear Parents,

* You should have received your conference confirmation. Let me know if there
is a problem with your scheduled time. It’s best to communicate to me
through email. I look forward to chatting with you at your child’s conference.

* In writing we are working on good sentences - capitals, ending marks and
making sure our words are making sense - ask your young one what they’re
working on in class.

* This week’s reading work will focus on predicting outcomes and our word
work will focus on abbreviations.

* In math we continue our work with number sense as well as strategies for
putting together and taking apart numbers (addition and subtraction) - making
tens, doubles, doubles plus one.
We’ve spent a lot of time learning these strategies and now we’ll extend that
work into fact families. Any additional practice you can do at home will
reinforce what we’re working on in class. Encourage conversation from your
child about our math workshop.

Have a Great Week!
Warmly,
Theresa

P.S. Remember, you need return only the Homework slip
(signed and activities checked). I'm trusting that if an activity is checked
then it was completed to your satisfaction.

Welcome ... and Welcome Back!
... to my Multiage class.
Our class will become a community of learners in which all members of the
class support, participate, share, and celebrate in each other's learning. I
consider you an important part of that community as well because you have been
your child's first teacher and role model. My goal is to provide all the
children with successful and exciting classroom experiences.

Some Helpful Tips for a Great School Year!

Absent Notes
If your child is absent from school, the office requires a note from
home explaining why your child was not in school. Please send a note
in with your child upon his or her return to school.

Purple Folders ~ Everyday Folders
Please be sure to check your child's purple folder each evening. If
you have a note, pick up request, or other information to send to school,
please place it in this folder. I will have the children check them each
morning and pack them each afternoon with any items they need to
bring home from school. Please empty these folders each evening and be
sure to have it back in their school bag for the following day!

Homework
Your child will have homework each evening. It is important to
establish routines early on to develop life- long skills as your child
continues through school. Each Monday (or first day of school for the
week) your child will come home with a homework sheet and a
classroom newsletter inside their homework folder. All homework slips will
be due on Friday (or the last day of school for the week). Please help your
child establish a time and place to do their homework each evening and
encourage them to take their time and do their "BEST" work.

Snacks
Each day we will take a short break for a snack. You may send a snack
with your child if you wish. A healthy and quick snack is perfect! Please do
not send drinks for snacks. The children are permitted to have water
throughout the day as they wish.

Birthdays
We love to celebrate special days and BIRTHDAYS are very special
for everyone in our room. If you would like to send in a healthy birthday
treat please let me know a few days in advance so that we don't plan
too many snacks for one day!

School Lunches
The cafeteria will send home menus each month for Penn London
students. If you would like to purchase lunch, please send in the proper
amount of cash or a check in a zip lock baggie or envelope with your
child's name and account # on it. Please do not send loose money in
your child's pocket. It becomes a problem when children lose it, find it,
or decide to use the money to buy snacks for their friends and then have
no lunch money for the week! Your child has a special pin # to use in the
cafeteria to keep track of their purchases. If you need a current
balance, please send a note and the cafeteria staff can check it for you.
If you pack lunch, please remember that soda and glass bottles are not
permitted in the cafeteria.

 Book Orders
I will send a variety of book orders home to offer you and your children
a wide selection of books at reasonable prices. Please do not feel
obligated to purchase books each month. I find that these clubs do offer
wonderful literature and really make it affordable to build home libraries
for children. If you would like to order, please send checks only, made
payable to "SCHOLASTIC". I would also like to remind you
to fill out the entire order form...don't forget your name!! These books
also make wonderful gifts for birthdays or holidays. If you would like to
place an order without your child knowing about it, please enclose a
note and we will keep them in the office until you can pick them up.

Toys and Games
Please be sure to remind your child to keep all toys and games at
home. We will have special days and scheduled events to bring things
to school. It is difficult to monitor all of the children with their toys
outside on the playground and too much of a distraction in class. Many times
items become lost or broken and can create problems and upset.

Names please...
I cannot stress enough that labeling your child's items is very
important!! Our lost and found bins become filled with hats, coats,
mittens, sweatshirts, backpacks.... all kinds of things! It looks like a
store for back to school shopping! I hate to think of all the money spent
on items that sit in a bin until summer clean out! Please mark all items
clearly!!!!

Keeping in Touch
I feel that for your child to get the best education possible, we need
to work together as a team. I plan to share what's going on in our
classroom by our weekly newsletter to keep you up to date about what
we are learning and any special events that we may be planning. I will
also contact you individually about your child if I have concerns to share.
Please feel free to contact me if you have concerns or questions about
something that is going on at school. Sometimes things that happen at
lunch or recess might not be brought to my attention. I would much
rather you contact me with small problems at the time rather then wait
until our conference time. I will get back to you as quickly as I can.
Remember, we are a team working together for the benefit of your child.
