News from Mrs. Krot

May is the month to think . . . PORTFOLIOS. The children should be bringing home their portfolios to share before the end of the month. I require
each student to prepare for his/her conference by preparing notes and pulling pieces of their work to share. Please help to make this a positive
experience for your child by making the time to listen and give feedback on their year. By the end of the month, you will also be receiving word
from me about end of the year GIEP conferences.

Third grade is well into the fairy tales unit. The main project is to re-write a fairy tale, giving it an American Indian flair. A lot of class time has
been spent learning different techniques for improving and enriching stories. These include using figurative language, adding dialogue, and
incorporating phrases into our sentences. Soon the stories will be ready for editing and illustrating. How exciting!

Fourth graders completed their construction challenge, creating a multi-step invention that popped a balloon. Currently they are practicing their
persuasive writing skills as they prepare an essay on how the world would be better off if a certain invention had never been built. We have spent
a lot of time discussing the impact inventions have on society, and the children are beginning to appreciate just how far-reaching some impacts
are. We will finish the year with a look at Rube Goldberg's inventive cartoons and try our hands at designing our own. I can't wait to see what
their creative minds develop.

The fifth grade students are working on their creativity project, the creation of a Look-alikes scene. Using the art work of Joan Steiner as a model,
the children are turning everyday items into "look-alike" objects as they build a scene. I won't tell you what it is, because I don't want to give away
the surprise. Let's just say coconuts, jolly laughs, bright lights, and hula skirts. Curious? Well, you'll just have to stop by our room some time
after June 2nd to see what the children came up with.

unit.
