As the school year begins, there are bound to be several questions dealing with fifth grade homework policy. Mr. Moyer, Mrs. Ray, and Mrs. Wundschock will have very similar policies in order to avoid confusion, since your child will be exposed to all of the fifth grade teachers. Homework is a valuable aid in helping students make the most of their experience in school. Homework is assigned to reinforce the skills and concepts students have learned during class, to teach responsibility, and to help students develop positive study habits. Homework is assigned Monday through Thursday. Fridays homework will usually be to read, work on long-term projects, and possibly to study for upcoming tests. Any homework not handed in on the day it is due will not be given full credit. The student will still be held responsible to complete the assignment. If a child is absent form school, they will be given three days to complete the work missed after returning from an absence. Spelling homework will be assigned on Friday and is due by Thursday. When daily edit homework is assigned, it will be given on Thursday and due Friday. Parents are encouraged to quiz their child for the spelling test on Friday. Students are expected to work on their own, asking for help only after they have given it their best effort. We request that parents make homework a top priority at home, provide a quiet environment, give much praise and support, and help their child, if necessary, but in no case do the homework for their child. We encourage parents to check their childs homework assignment book on a daily basis. Signing their book is not required unless we request that in the future. We feel privileged to have your child in class. We are looking forward to working with you to provide your child with the skills necessary for fifth grade and beyond.Back to Top
What is the requirement for independent reading?
In fifth grade each student is required to independently read at least 20 chapter books by the end of the school year. The chosen chapter books should be at your childs reading level. In order for the children to be accountable for these readings they will need to complete 5 books per marking period, most of which will be done in class during our reading workshop.Back to Top

What should I bring for snack?
I suggest something without a lot of sugar in it. Since we often work and eat at the same time, a healthy, convenient snack that does not create a mess would be wonderful!Back to Top
Does fifth grade go on any field trips?
Yes! We visit the Vo-Tech school twice, once for a tour and once for lunch. We go to the Adventure Aquarium in Camden, NJ, somtime in early April. We travel to Gettysburg around the end of May/beginning of June. We also attend a fun Civil War History Alive Experience at South Middle School towards the end of the year. Lastly, we go to Camp America as part of our 5th grade graduation fun!Back to Top
What is the sign and return folder?
The red sign and return folder comes home every Monday (unless otherwise informed) with your child's work and notices from the office inside. You are asked to look over your child's papers and sign anything that has been graded. Usually it will have a sing & return stamp on it, but any work that has a letter grade on it should be signed and return to school as soon as possible. All folders are expected back to school by Thursday. Also, please feel free to write on the communication sheet, as I too will often make comments.Back to Top

Reading calendars are a way to keep track of the reading that takes place at home and are part of the student's reading grade. Each month your child is given a colored reading calendar on which they should record the number of minutes and pages read. The goal is to read at least 20 minutes five days a week. These are due the first of every month.Back to Top
