Hi, Everyone!
We really enjoyed our conferences with the second grade parents. It is so
helpful to talk with each of you, face-to-face, about how your child is doing
in school. We hope the information we provided was helpful to you as well.
December will be another busy month!
Math - Children are working through Unit 4. In this Unit of study, addition
and subtraction number stories are used as a way to develop mental math
skills. The unit concludes with work on pencil-and-paper strategies. Our
three main areas of focus during this unit are: solving number stories,
reading and showing temperatures, developing different strategies for adding
2- and 3-digit numbers.
As we begin Unit 5, the children will be exploring spatial
relationships as they study 2-D and 3-D shapes. This geometry unit will
involve your children in developing new vocabulary. So, if you hear the
word "polygon" it doesn't mean your parrot has flown away!
In Language Arts, students are learning all about nouns. They have learned
that nouns are words that name people, places, and things. They are learning
about the difference between common and proper nouns. They will practice
using more specific nouns in their writing.
In Reading, we continue to read a variety of stories in reading workshop.
We are working on identifying a story’s main idea and details, as well as
plot (problem & solution). Students continue to use the following
comprehension strategies as they read their "just right" books: making
connections, visualizing, predicting, inferring, and questioning. As you
read together at home, please review these skills orally with your child.
We will conclude our study of the Weather shortly. All bulbs have been
planted by the students. Now we wait.
Have a wonderful holiday season as you observe traditions and celebrations
that have become special and meaningful to your family!
