Homework is NOT required per say, in the Reading Support classroom. Think of it more as a reading incentive! With all students I work with, my overarching goal is for them to be passionate about books and in developing the effective strategies that will challenge and inspire them to read, read, read (and write, write, write!) First Grade: Students should be bringing their Reading Folders back and forth to school each day, so that they can record the days on the monthly calendar, that they are reading at home. Parents need to sign their initials and write the number of minutes that the student spends reading...at least ten "days" recorded earns a prize- and more than ten times will earn a BONUS! Second Grade: Students need to bring their Reading Folders back and forth each day as well, and by the end of the month they should have at least FIVE book titles (and authors) recorded on the monthly sheet. Of course, MORE than five books will also earn a BONUS! SECOND GRADE: READ WITH ME book bags (containing a book, tape cassette and question sheet) will come home every so often. Students listen and follow along with the nook on tape, then work with a parent or other adult to answer the reading comprehension questions. (Adults MAY do the writing!!!) Third Grade: Students' reading folders have Reading Reflection pages, two each month, so that any reading they are doing to earn a "reward" from me, can also be turned into their classroom teachers for credit towards their 25 yearly total. Completing the two monthly Reading Reflections (these books are longer than in previous grades, of course) will earn a prize- but the CR teacher will determine if they are of sufficient quality to be included in the "count"- so do your BEST work!
