St. Philip School and the Diocese of Pittsburgh have developed a music and theater curriculum that
has satisfied the National Standards for Arts Education. They are as follows:
1. The student will sing a varied repertoire of music.
2. The student will perform a varied repertoire of music.
3. The student will improvise melodies, variations and accompaniments.
4. The students will compose and arrange music.
5.The student will read and learn musical notation.
6.The student will listen to, analyze, and describe music.
7. The student will evaluate music and musical performances and participate in musical and
theatrical performances.
8. The student will understand the relationship between music, the other arts, and disciplines
outside of the arts.
9. The student will understand music and the theater in relation to history and culture present and
past.
St. Philip School and the Diocese of Pittsburgh have compliled a curriculum which covers the National
Standards for the Visual Arts. They are as follows:
1.The students will be able to use various media and techniques.
2. The student will be able to use basic knowledge of structures (elements of art and principals of
design) and functions(how they work together).
3. The student will be able to choose and evaluate a variety of subject matter, symbols, and ideas.
4. The students will be able to demonstrate understanding of visual arts in relation to history and
culture.
5. The students will be able to reflect upon and assess the characteristics and merits of their work
and the work of others.
6. The students will be able to make connections between the visual arts and other disciplines.
All of the above standards are included in the Fine Arts curriculum at St. Philip School. The books
used in the Fine Arts curriculum are "Art in Action" by Coronado, "Music Connections" by Silver
Burdette, The Duquesne University Link-Up Program for the Recorders by the Weil
Foundation, "Creative and Performing Arts" issued by the Allegheny Intermediate Unit and the
Diocese of Pittsburgh, "The Theater Machine Textbook I and II, Web Site Links, and a wide variety of
supplemental materials available through St. Philip School and the Diocese of Pittsburgh.
