Just a reminder that applications for the 2014 Cardinal Wuerl Scholarship from Junior Achievement of Western PA are due this week.  Everything must be post-marked by Friday, April 18, for a student to qualify for this award.  Eligibility information and the full application are attached.  They are also available on our website
If you, your students, or their parents have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me at or (412) 208-4747 ext. 111.
Thank you,

Friday is the last day to place your order for April’s Market Day, with pick up on Thursday April 24th from 6-7 in the school cafeteria.   Don’t forget with all the holiday rushing around and place your order today.  There are many specials and sales that Market day is running including the kid favorite chocolate chip mini pancakes, the supersweet corn, many varieties of chicken, and the cheesecake pops – YUM! Please let Sharon (412-771-2964) or Linda (412-913-1269) know if you have any questions or problems with your order.  The more you buy, the bigger percentage comes back to St. Philips and ultimately to you for your FRQ; so order now for a head start on next year’s FRQ. Thank you so very much for your support of Market Day!

Attention Soccer Parents,
Under no circumstances should you park or drop-off for soccer practices or games in the lot closest to the field at St. Paul's. The folks at the seminary allow us to use their field provided we do not park in that lot. Please respect their wishes.

St. Baldrick's Foundation fundraiser  Jack Shorthouse and Michael Kanavy's team (St.  Philip 8th Grade Boys) raised $1,080 for childhood cancer.  The best news is that the money they raised through St. Baldrick's will go to Pittsburgh's Children's Hospital.
Congratulations to
the SPS 4th Grade Girls’ and JV Boys’ basketball teams
for their recent successes!
The Girls won 4 out of 6 games
at Brookline Regional Catholic’s annual
“March Madness” tournament to capture 3rd place overall.
The JV Boys
made it all the way to the Diocesan “Final Four,”
losing in the semifinals to eventual—
and defending—champion St. Mary’s,
and followed that up by
defeating St. Gabriel’s in the championship game
of the Northside Catholic tournament.
Kudos to all the kids and their coaches!

Check out how the St. Philip 8th Grade Boys are helping children with cancer.
Dear St. Philip School Parents,
The 2014-2015 SPS fundraising year has started and what an easy way to get a jump on that $450 FRQ by simply ordering from Market Day this month! Many Lenten items are available on sale like the popcorn shrimp, the Krispy Krunchy Cod, and Lemon Pepper Breaded Haddock Filets. Try one or all this Lenten season.
Also, Dessert Bonus Days are here - delicious, convenient, and great to have on hand for any occasion, especially with Easter on the way.  If you don’t have time to bake for the SPS Fish Fry, purchasing one or more of these desserts will help the school in two ways!  This month, the more you buy, the more our school earns!  What a delicious way to earn funds for St. Philip Elementary School!

Ordering is easy at  Simply place your order by this Friday March 14th at 11pm with pick-up next Thursday March 20 from 6-7 in the school cafeteria.
Please contact Linda Zug at 412-913-1269 or Sharon Mell at 412-771-2964 if you have any questions.
Thank you so much for your continued support of our wonderful school.

Option C and Grade Book
Education is expensive
but our children are worth every penny.
Our tuition does not cover the cost of all expenses,
therefore, we depend on FRQ (fundraising)
to defray many expenses not covered by our tuition.
Families can manage their FRQ by
participating in events.
All families are obligated to participate
OR pay the $450  FRQ
and $200 of "unvolunteered" time.
If you owe a fraction of your obligation,
it was due February 28.  Pay your balance now.
We have begun a new FRQ year for 2014-15.
If you have not met your 2013-14 FRQ,
your Grade Book on OPTION C has been
turned off and you cannot see your child's grades.
Paying your bill will enable you to see grades again.
Your cooperation in this makes a difference at
St. Philip School.
Thank  you

SPS  JV Boys
Congratulations to the SPS JV Boys basketball team, which won its Diocesan quarterfinal playoff game against St. Bernadette on Sunday!  Our boys will now advance to the Diocesan semifinals against defending champion St. Mary’s from Glenshaw.  That game will be played this Tuesday, March 11th, at 6:30 at Our Lady of Grace school in Scott Township.  We encourage everyone to come out and support our boys that night!

We’re turning ONE HUNDRED!!!

The upcoming 2014-15 school year will mark the 100th anniversary of St. Philip School and plans are underway to hold a number of exciting commemorative events!  Mark your calendars for the Centennial Mass September 28th, 2014,

celebrated by the Most Reverend Bishop  David A. Zubik, and look for an announcement soon on the Centennial Gala bash to be held that same weekend.

As part of many projects to increase awareness and enrollment, we are also in the process of filming a documentary about our award-winning school. We are extremely grateful to the Digital Club at Bishop Canevin, mentored by Mr. Nick Sinagra, for their volunteer efforts in making this documentary possible. We will be filming at various school events from now through spring.

You can help make this documentary a success by SENDING IN PHOTOS OR VIDEO FOOTAGE you may have of any school event, especially those from prior years. If you yourself are an alumni, and/or have parents or other older family members who attended the school, PLEASE  look through old photos and send in any you may have to the school office, attention: Documentary Committee. We will take ANY historical and current photos that show off the many attributes of our school ranging from:

·      sports / cheerleading events and spirit day walks

·      band concerts, school picnics,

Fall Masquerade and Santa Breakfast

·      Night at the Races, Family Fun Night, Comedy Night and Alumni Galas

·      Forensics tournaments and Thinking Caps events

·      Classroom events (for example, Third Grade Wax Museum)

·      communion, confirmation, GRACE programs

and graduation ceremonies

·      Crazy Olympics, talent shows, Christmas and Easter pageants, school dances, middle school musicals,

and anything we’ve missed!

All material will be returned, but we need as many visuals as we can get by March 1.

In addition, since this is a once in a lifetime volunteer opportunity,

we would gladly welcome any parent who would like to serve on

the 100th committee. We will need as many dedicated volunteers

as possible to make the year a success.  Our next planning meeting

will be held on Wednesday, February 12 at 7 P.M. in the school

library.  If you are interested in joining our efforts, please email

Jennifer Shorthouse at

The sky is truly the limit on what we can accomplish together - please consider helping St. Philip School make history!

WE have been preparing for this great CSW.
Also we have installed a heater in the gym.  You can see it high up
in the right corner of the gym above the bleachers.
It involved no removal or installation of asbestos.  The boiler that
broke was in a little locked cupboard in the Band room. A very small
amount of asbestos from the boiler was professionally removed one day
when no students were in the building.
Another repair was done this week.  Pipes were installed from
the  Fine Arts Room up through the gym to connect to the main boiler of the school
and supply heat to the Fine Arts Room.  No asbestos was was
involved in this procedure, just dust.

The installers blocked off their equipment in the "green" area
of the gym out of the way, so that practice could go on
all weekend.   The gym has been available for us to use.
You will receive information if there is a

St. Philip School Safety Plan

ST. Philip School is committed to the safety and security of its students, faculty, staff, and visitors.  The Department for Catholic Schools, Diocese of Pittsburgh, has researched and prepared a customized All Hazards Plan in conjunction with the

Commonwealth of PA Emergency Management Agency.

Every teacher is involved in preparing the Safety Plan for SPS.

This plan covers all four phases of an emergency:  Prevention, preparedness, response and recovery.

In preparation, at St. Philip School, we are teaching the students different drills, like fire drill, lock down and severe weather drill.

On Monday, October 21 we will practice a lock down drill.  An announcement will be made and the classroom doors will be locked. Students will move away from the classroom door and follow the teacher’s directions. The learning in all of this is that the students know what to do and how to be serious about the drills.

You will be informed as the Safety Plan develops.  Thank you for your support.

St. Philip School has been in the process of accepting bids for Gym Uniforms in order to provide the most economical price and convenient ordering for our families.

The focus has been on choosing appropriate, desirable, affordable and available apparel for Gym Uniforms and then transitioning to items for Spirit Wear for children and adults.

Please continue with the current gym clothing procedures for the next few weeks.  If you should need any additional items, please visit the Uniform Exchange outside of the Preschool Rooms; and/or, contact the Main Office.

It is important to make thorough decisions throughout each step of this process to launch a successful Spirit Wear Campaign.  Many great ideas have been generated (i.e. SPS Website Order Placement) and we want to be sure it is convenient as possible for our families.

Thank you for your cooperation.

Re:       Healthy Pennsylvania – Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP)
Governor Tom Corbett recently announced his Healthy Pennsylvania initiative in which a key part is to ensure that every child in Pennsylvania has health care.
Healthy Pennsylvania works to ensure that all Pennsylvania children have access to quality, affordable health care coverage that best meets their needs.
The plan also eliminates CHIP’s six month waiting period for eligible families in certain income ranges, allowing Pennsylvania children to have continued and timely access to CHIP coverage.
If parents contact you for information about CHIP or options available to them under Governor Corbett’s proposal, below are helpful links to information to share with families.

Wait on the side of the street opposite the school or at the bottom of the K of C lot for your child. Please do not wait at the bottom of the driveway. Please do not call out to your child to come to you. Several children were nearly hit last year because parents had called to a child to cross not realizing that we have motioned for the buses to pull up or depart or cars were proceeding up West Crafton Ave.

--Please do not attempt to drive up West Crafton Ave or park anywhere on West Crafton Ave. (West Crafton is the street at the bottom of the driveway.) The corner near the church has been painted with yellow lines and Police will enforce it as a no-parking zone. The bus drivers are complaining that they have difficulty making the bend into the street and getting through. Parking on West Crafton creates a safety problem for children getting on the buses.

--Please do not pull out onto West Crafton Ave when buses are loading or departing. It is illegal to do so and you may be ticketed.

Hello to All St. Philip Coaches, Parents & Guardians:

Thank you for all you do for our kids. We appreciate your time: coaching, working the concession stand, and helping out as needed. Our athletic program would not exist without such great support.

As a new season of home games is about to begin at Bishop Canevin, the St. Philip Athletic Association would like to ask for your help regarding the use of the Bishop Canevin.

We are fortunate to have a strong partnership with Bishop Canevin High School and are grateful for their willingness to share their facility with us.

Treat Bishop Canevin as if we are guests (which we are). Please do your part to dispose of trash, wrappers, water and sport bottles. Please do not allow children to run through the hallways of Canevin or play with sport balls in the hallways. It is for their safety and is respectful of Canevin.

If children are left unattended to play in the hallways of Canevin, we will stop whatever game is in progress, make an announcement, and ask the parents to please get their children.
Parking at Bishop Canevin is in designated spaces only. Reserved parking spaces are reserved for Canevin Administration 7 days a week. At no time is parking permitted around the circle or directly in front of the school.
Lastly, we are asking that every coach, parent, guardian, and player help make Sportsmanship an expectation.

Please Let the Players Play.
Let the Coaches Coach.
Let the Officials Officiate.

And Let the Spectators Be Positive!

Thank you,
