KQV will be carrying ads for the next two weeks that encourage businesses to sign up for the EITC and OSTC tax credit programs in support of our Catholic schools. It is important that these businesses apply as early on July 3 as possible since any available tax credits are awarded on a first come, first served basis.

Based on input he received from meetings with principals, development officers and business owners, Deacon Jack has created a website to assist you and others in promoting and signing up for the tax credits. It can be found at and then clicking on the “Ways to Support Catholic Education” link in the upper left hand section of the page. All related links for registration can be found in the “Helpful Links” box on the Tax Credit site.

Congrats to all our winners!!

Congratulations Developmental Soccer!
Congratulations to our SPS 1st-4th grade soccer players on their terrific performance in the Diocesan developmental tournament this past Saturday!  Our 2nd grade teams won 2 games and tied another.  Our 4th grade team won its group and advanced to the semifinals, losing to eventual champion St. Kilian.  And our 3rd grade team won the tournament, twice defeating last season’s 3rd grade champion, St. Kilian, and winning all 5 of its games.  Third graders Keely Bodnar, Tomiwa Adewumi, and Luke Wrabley were named to the All-Tournament team, and Tomiwa was recognized as the Most Outstanding Player.  All of the kids made SPS proud!

JV Soccer Playoffs
The SPS JV soccer team will play in the Diocesan playoff quarterfinals this Friday, June 9, at 5 pm at Seton La Salle High School against St. Alphonsus.  The team is looking for a large and loud SPS turnout.  A win will advance the JV team to the semifinals Saturday morning at 9 am at LaRoche College.  We hope to see many of you this Friday!

Canned Goods

Canned Goods are being accepted for St. Vincent de Paul Food Bank

at tomorrow's all school liturgy, Friday, June 2nd.

Thank You for all of your generosity throughout the school year

to help those in our local community.

JV and Developmental Soccer
Our JV soccer team will take on playoff qualifier St. Bonaventure tonight at St. Paul Seminary at 6:45 p.m. in a playoff tune-up.  If you’re looking to get outside on what should be a beautiful evening, think about coming to cheer the kids on and enjoy some good soccer.  We’ll be getting the word out about playoffs once the league sends us the schedule—we expect to play sometime mid-late next week.
Also, our 1st-4th grade Developmental teams will be playing their season-ending tournament this Saturday at Marshall Elementary School in Wexford.  Our teams play throughout the day, starting with our 1st-2nd grade teams in the morning, our 3rd grade team early afternoon, and our 4th grade team late afternoon.  Please come out and support the kids if you can.

Let's Go Pens!!!

Wednesday, May 31, 2017

For the donation of $1.00 or more per student to the Sr. Annina Fox, S.C. Fund, each student may dress down on Wednesday, May 31, 2017.  Please observe all dress down rules and regulations and wear your Pens gear and/or black and gold to cheer our Pittsburgh Penguins on to victory in the Stanley Cup Finals!  Remember too that it is gym day for 2A, so the children need gym shoes and clothing appropriate for that class.  Thank you for your cooperation and generosity.

Congratulations JV Soccer
Congratulations to the JV Soccer team on clinching a playoff berth Tuesday night after their 4-3 victory against Aquinas!  The team finished with a 7-1 regular season record

and will now go on to the Diocesan playoffs the week of June 5 as one of 6 qualifiers.

Thanks to everyone who came out to support the team Tuesday night—

the kids are looking forward to seeing you at their playoff game in a few weeks.

Tuition Alert!

There are families in our school that have a tuition balance.

All tuition must be paid by June 1, 2017, or have an approved payment plan in place.

Payment plans are handled by Business Coordinator, Ursula 412-922-6300 x 3.

Failure to resolve tuition issues will forfeit registration for 2017-1018 school year.

The above is in accordance with the recommendation of the Parish Administrator, Finance Council and School Principal.

SPS JV Soccer
Come out and support our JV team

this Tuesday, May 23rd (tomorrow), at 6:30 at St. Paul Seminary

in the final section game of the season.

The JV team is now 6-1 and faces a challenging Aquinas Academy opponent.

A win would clinch a playoff spot for the JV team

for the third season in a row—and possibly secure a section championship.

Bring your family out Tuesday and enjoy some soccer with other SPS families!

REMINDER: Fall sports registration is tomorrow night in the courtyard, from 6-7pm.

Dear Families,

Some families did not have the opportunity to sell Festival raffle tickets. Since this is the biggest fundraiser for our school, we need all families to participate.

The dress down day has been changed to Tuesday, May 23, not tomorrow. This will give all families a chance to sell tickets, make our St. Philip Festival a success as well as participate in a dress down day.

Thank you,

Reminder that fall sports registration will be next Tuesday, May 23rd from 6-7pm in the courtyard.  Registration forms went home in the FIP last week, and forms are also available on the school website under the athletics tab.  The summer is a great time to get your child's updated sports physical. These forms are also available on the SPAA website. The deadline to register for fall sports is Friday, June 9th. Please email Mary Aiello at with any questions.
 SPS  Soccer
Our SPS Soccer teams are winding down their regular seasons.  The Varsity team has 3 home games remaining at St. Paul’s Seminary, starting with tonight’s game at 6:30 p.m.  The Varsity also plays this Saturday at home at 12:45 p.m.  The JV team is in the playoff hunt with a 5-1 record and 2 home games remaining.  Its next game is this Saturday at the Seminary at 11:30 p.m.  Our JV and Varsity players would love to see a strong showing of support this week!

It has come to our attention that a member of one of our families has been diagnosed with pertussis (whooping cough).

If your child does not have complete childhood immunizations or is immunocompromised, you may want to contact your physician.

Also, infants under 6 months old and women in their third trimester may want to seek advice.

Please remember, however, that there has not been a case of whooping cough diagnosed within our school.

We are in need of middle school volunteers for plant sale pickup anytime between 5:30 and 10:30 a.m. this Saturday May 13.

Service hours are available if your child volunteers.

Contact Maureen Hayes at or Leanne Stickman at  to volunteer.

Happy Earth Day!

Tomorrow, April 22nd, the world will celebrate the 47th annual Earth Day. As Catholics committed to caring for creation and caring for the poor we mark this day as a moment to draw closer to God, the creator of the universe.

On Earth Day, the staff and board of Catholic Climate Covenant celebrate you and all your efforts to increase awareness of care for creation and climate change issues. We especially thank the over 1,300 people who have downloaded our 2017 Earth Day resource, “Know the Creator Through Creation”. We have heard from many parishes, schools, and religious communities about their plans for their Earth Day celebrations and we look forward to sharing some of the awesome local programs planned for tomorrow or near future.

This year, Earth Day is also a day to lift up the importance of science in the conversation about climate change and how faith and science are both pathways to ultimate truths.  The Covenant released a statement expressing its support for the April 22 March for Science and its goal to demonstrate that science can contribute to the common good and that scientific evidence can help inform smart and effective public policies that serve the public interest.

On Earth Day 2017, let us remember the words of Saint Pope John Paul II, ‘Faith and reason are like two wings on which the human spirit rises to the contemplation of truth’ (1998 encyclical Fides et Ratio). Together, let us rise, and based on the undeniable science behind climate change, let us take action.

In gratitude,

Catholic Climate Covenant

Tuition Assistance
Private School Aid Service (PSAS), the company that previously managed our tuition assistance program, was acquired by FACTS Management.  FACTS currently provides tuition collection services for a number of our schools.  Our previous customer support team from PSAS was retained by FACTS so we are hoping for a seamless transition and an enhanced product.  The transition to FACTS has taken longer than expected and although there will be many similarities, there will be some changes.  FACTS will be providing training and in-service, as well as customer support for schools and families.
Here is some basic information about the process for 2017-18 as well as the link to the online FACTS tuition aid application for the Diocese of Pittsburgh.
1.                 The family application fee has been reduced from $28 to $25.
2.                 While paper applications will be available for 2017-18, families are strongly encouraged to apply online.  As you know, many organizations are moving to online applications given the efficiencies provided.  Examples include the IRS and FASFA application for college tuition aid.  We hope you will, in turn, encourage your families to do so and provide whatever support you can.  Paper forms will be sent in the near future for families without internet access.
3.                 The application deadline has been extended to March 31, 2017.  If individual families have extenuating circumstances in meeting this deadline, we will be as flexible as possible in accommodating them.
4.                 FACTS will be contacting each school directly to set up login information and provide website navigation instructions to monitor families and their application status. As in the past, schools will not have access to family financial information but will be able to see each student’s financial need as a result of the need assessment process.
5.                 Some differences for 2017-18 online applicants:
a.     Principals will be asked to log in and confirm Pre-School tuition for each student as opposed to signing a paper form.
b.     Principals will be asked to log in and confirm Special Education status, when applicable, as opposed to signing a paper form.
c.      A form will be provided to Catholic families for their pastor’s signature on the diocesan website.
d.     The EITC Income and OSTC school forms will be discontinued.  Eligibility for these programs will be determined from data gathered from the application.
6.                 Similarities for 2017-18:
a.     The diocese will still collect K-12 tuition rate information in the spring and provide these rates to FACTS.
b.     Parents will receive a family award letter with their grants.
c.      Schools will be provided, either via paper or online reports, the same family information as in the past (e.g. need per student, EITC/OSTC eligibility, aid awards, etc.)
d.     If emergencies arise after initial grants are disbursed, families are free to address an email to: Dr. Michael Latusek, Superintendent of Schools, at
e.     The same aid funds will be available to parents depending upon their eligibility:
7.                 Bishop’s Education Fund- For Catholic families with students in grades K-12
Educational Improvement Tax Credit Program (EITC)- Open to any student in grades PS to 12 from families meeting maximum income levels.  (Families from certain private schools who have established their own funds are not eligible.)
Opportunity Scholarship Tax Credit Program (OSTC)- Open to any student in grades K-12 who meets the EITC income guidelines and would be attending a low achieving public school as defined by the Commonwealth.
8.                 Diocesan Website Link- All information needed to apply for aid, including the link to the FACTS online application, is on the diocesan website under the “Catholic Education” tab.  The direct link to post on your own website and share with families is:
As always, feel free to call our office with any questions or concerns.

Centennial Documentary Now Available!
The Centennial documentary is now available for viewing on our website.  The two-part documentary was a time-intensive labor of love for two parent volunteers since 2014. Many, many thanks to the DOZENS of current and former students, teachers and families for agreeing to be interviewed on camera and for the many more who offered background information, fact-checking and photographs, including various area organizations, the Diocese, and the Sisters of Charity. Also a very special thank you to Nick Sinagra and Bishop Canevin High School for use of their camera equipment for almost 18 months!

Part I of the film spans the era from the settling of Crafton through the 1990s, when Sister Geri began her service as Principal. Part 2 is a collection of video collages highlighting our many achievements of the past two decades as well as the many features that make our current school so strong, vibrant and successful.  We are extremely grateful to co-producer and film editor Robin Hodgin Frick for essentially doing all of the work of a full production studio over countless hours at her home computer.  Special thanks as well to co-producer and script writer Elvira Hoff, and to Michael Hoff, who provided the voice-over.  We thank you for your patience since the project went well overtime - but not over budget.  Because of the generosity of time and spirit of all involved, the documentary did not cost our school a dime. DVD's will be available soon for those who purchased them.  But for now, let's celebrate the perseverance of ALL of those who contributed to creating this wonderful keepsake of our 100th birthday.   Part 1     Part 2

Our school is beginning the process of Middle States re-accreditation which is an external, objective validation of school quality and student achievement that fosters continuous school improvement. Along with all the schools in the Diocese of Pittsburgh, St Philip School is being asked to assess our school’s performance in many areas and to choose some goals for improvement. Parent input is an important part of this activity and parents are asked to help measure the school’s “current reality” by assessing the school against the 12 Middle States Standards for Accreditation.
An on-line survey is being provided to help parents with this task.
The link to access the survey is - .

This link can also be found on the SPS website –
Please respond by November 15th.
Thank you for your co-operation in this effort to make St Philip School a truly excellent place of learning.

NEWS from SPS Revised 2B

The first day of school will be here before you know it and there are many new and exciting things happening this year at St. Philip! I’m happy to give you an overview of some of the changes.

Faculty Updates

We wish Mrs. Miller, Mrs. Ehmann and Mr. Dan Miller the best in their new endeavors as they departures from St. Philip School.

Miss Catherine Rogers will be teaching  2B.

Mrs. Wilfert be teaching  4A.

The third grade will have one classroom this year and we welcome Mrs. Anne Peterson, who did a long term substitution at SPS, as our new 3rd Grade teacher.

We are happy to have Mr. Andrew Kraus as our new music and band teacher this year.

The faculty is currently preparing for the school year and will update the school supplies list so students are prepared. Please check the school website for updated teacher webpages, teacher emails and new faculty bios!

As many of you know, Mrs. Gilles has retired this year and we are so grateful for her many years of service to our school!

Mrs. Suzy Ruskin is our new school secretary, a former library director. Please welcome her as you call into the office or stop by the school!

Facility Improvements

We are excited to announce that our STEAM Lab is almost complete and will be up and running very soon. The lab will hold our library of technology items but will also serve as an “idea” forum for interactive learning.

The STEAM Lab, as well as the Library, will have new air conditioning units this year.

New blinds have been installed in all classrooms and will hopefully help cool the rooms as well as provide shade for Smartboard use. Blinds have also been installed on the classroom doors for security purposes.

New carpet has been installed in many classrooms.

We thank St. Philip Parish for the newly paved parking lots.

Classroom Assignments

Please check Option C for classroom assignments. If you do not have a password, please call the office and Mrs. Ruskin, new secretary, will be happy to forward you the information.

New St. Philip Families

We understand that there is always a learning curve when entering a new school. As a new family, you will be assigned a Parent Partner. If you feel that you need assistance right away, please call the office and we can help direct you!

SPS is almost ready for the new school year, but not yet.

1.  See the revision of faculty and staff on Option C...keep watching
2.  Several rooms have new rugs from the Centennial Funds
3. Since the Grades 3,4,5 Girls bath room had water damage by a girl plugging up a sink
on purpose, we had to repair bathrooms and several areas to the tune of over $5,000.
(Thank God it was covered by insurance).
Our 1st School Rule is:
4.  Our new STEAM ROOM is almost complete with the use of Centennial Funds
(It was the Wireless Lab).
5.  Every window and classroom door in K-8 have new blinds with the Centennial Funds.
6.  Several families have received a grant from the  Centennial Compassion Fund.
7.  More news later as we enjoy our 2nd Century of glory.
We are grateful for the PAST,  PRESENT, and  FUTURE of
Catholic Education for our YOUTH who are our future leaders.
Continue to invite more new families to St. Philip School.
They are WELCOME.
We say:

Happy  Summer 2016
Welcome All

Congratulations to the SPS JV soccer team

 on an outstanding season!

The team advanced to the Diocesan semifinals in the top division this past Saturday
after defeating St. Alphonsus 2-0 in the quarterfinals last week.
Although they came up short in the semifinal game against Allison Park United,
the kids’ effort and performance in that game was something
those in attendance will not soon forget.

The way the kids played and handled themselves with class in defeat
represented what SPS is all about—

they made all of us proud.
