OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Congratulations to the SPS JV soccer team

 on an outstanding season!

The team advanced to the Diocesan semifinals in the top division this past Saturday
after defeating St. Alphonsus 2-0 in the quarterfinals last week.
Although they came up short in the semifinal game against Allison Park United,
the kids’ effort and performance in that game was something
those in attendance will not soon forget.

The way the kids played and handled themselves with class in defeat
represented what SPS is all about—

they made all of us proud.

SPS JV SOCCER

Congratulations to the SPS JV soccer team on their 2-0 Diocesan quarterfinal victory earlier today over perennial power St. Alphonsus!  The kids played incredibly well and incredibly hard, and made SPS proud.  The JV team now advances to the Diocesan semifinals this Saturday, June 11th, at LaRoche College in the North Hills (address is 9000 Babcock Boulevard, Pittsburgh, PA 15237) at 10:30 a.m.  The team would love to see a strong SPS showing of support this Saturday.  Please come out and show your SPS pride!

All for Books Challenge extended to tonight!

Due to the short school week this week, we only raised $85 for the All for Books challenge.  Every dollar raised for All for Books is a dollar our teachers get to spend at the book fair – and we LOVE our teachers!

To show them how much we love them, the challenge is being extended to the end of the Open House this evening.  Please bring your donations with you and drop them off at the book fair!

Don’t forget – the classroom that raises the most money will also win a “dress as your favorite book character” day at school!

Let’s show our teachers how much we appreciate all they do for our children throughout the year – and earn a fun dress down while we’re at it!

Dear Parents of St. Philip School,

NATIONAL PRAYER
Someone has said that if Christians really understood the full extent of the power we have available through prayer, we might be speechless. During WWII there was an adviser to Churchill who organized a group of people who dropped what they were doing every day at a prescribed hour for one minute to collectively pray for the safety of England, its people and peace. There is now a group of people organizing the same thing here in America. If you would like to participate, Every evening at 9:00 PM Eastern Time (8:00 PM Central) (7:00 PM Mountain)(6:00 PM Pacific), stop whatever you are doing and spend one minute praying for the safety of the United States and for a return to a Godly nation. If you know anyone else who would like to participate, please pass this along. Our prayers are the most powerful asset we have. Please forward this to your praying friends.

ALL FOR BOOKS CLASSROOM COIN CHALLENGE

This is a reminder that The All for Books Classroom Coin Challenge begins TOMORROW, January 25th, and runs all week.  ALL money collected goes to our school for the purchase of books for the teachers’ classrooms and the library.  For each $1 that is collected from your generous donations, Scholastic Books will place ONE book into the hands of a child living in a distressed situation.  Imagine turning your coins into smiles for these kids who lack the resources to own a book.  These children really need your help.

On Monday we will collect DOLLAR BILLS, Tuesday is QUARTERS, Wednesday is DIMES, Thursday is NICKELS, and Friday is PENNIES.  By helping the kids in need, you can also help your classroom to win the challenge.  Please consider giving throughout this campaign.  Thank you to everyone who has already donated money through the All for Books slips that are currently displayed in the cafeteria.  These already collected donations are applied to the classroom challenge.  Good luck everyone!

ADJUST YOUR CALENDARS!

St. Philip School is excited for the opportunity to experience TWO Book Fairs this school year.

Our first book fair is on schedule as per your flyers sent out in the FIP on January 6th.
NOTE that we recently decided to operate the fair ONLY during school hours
on Monday, February 1st and Tuesday, February 2nd.
We will NOT conduct the fair on the evening of February 2nd as the flyer stated.
Going forward, we will refer to this fair as our STUDENT BOOK FAIR.
An updated flyer will appear in the January 20th FIP.

Our April book fair will take place Thursday, March 31st and Friday, April 1st during school hours.
The fair will reopen to families on Friday, April 1 evening along with our
Grace Program,  exciting Glow Room, Art Exhibit, and Home Room visits.
This fair will be referred to as our FAMILY BOOK FAIR.
We will distribute separate flyers regarding this fair during the month of March.

Below are a few NOTES to mention regarding the Student Book Fair in February:

Raffle Ticket(s) buy your chances NOW through Wednesday, January 29th.  Winners announced at the end of the school day Jan. 29.

Used Children’s books are being accepted beginning Monday, January 11th through January 22nd.  Repurposed into loving hands at a resale price of just 0.50 cents.  ASK the volunteers to see the USED BOOK SALE at the fair.

All for Books is currently in full swing.  Get your entries in today.  Final entries will be accepted at the Book Fair during your class visit.  Look for a NEW challenge to begin the week of January 18th.  Remember that ALL donations are matched through Scholastic to help those who are less fortunate.

Your Teacher’s WISH LIST is due to be published on Friday, January 29th.  Please help your child select a book to donate to their classroom.  You may send a note with your child if you wish to help make your teacher’s dreams come true.

BIRTHDAY books may be purchased the day of the fair.  Buying your favorite book and having your name and birthday placed inside the cover will create a lasting celebration of you on your special day.  Don’t forget to set money aside to create a lasting memory.  Make your selections using your Scholastic brochure found in the Jan. 20 FIP.

Believing that excellence is not something that just happens, but rather something which must be planned, created and fostered, the Catholic Schools in the Diocese of Pittsburgh seek to gain the insights and perceptions of the school community on the 2015 Benchmarks for Excellence and Viability of

the Schools in the Diocese of Pittsburgh. The benchmarks are based on a nationwide collaborative study

of excellence and vitality in Catholic Education which was cooperatively adapted for use in the Diocese of Pittsburgh.

St. Philip School is in the process of assessing the daily practice of these benchmarks for excellence and vitality in our school. We need your help! We want to know your impressions of our school. The survey includes indicators and a rating scale response for each indicator. Space is provided for you to comment.

Please complete this survey by October 9, 2015.

All volunteers must be fully compliant before serving in our schools.

PTG Volunteer Sign-Ups
The link below lists events for October and November that need volunteers.   Comedy Night is in November and because it is an adult only event, clearances are not required.  However if you are volunteering at the Spirit Walk or Fall Masquerade you will need clearances.
If you have any questions about any of the activities, please visit the PTG link on the school website, find the list of chairpersons for this year (on the left side of the page) and contact them with questions.
Remember to include your contact information on the second page of the survey, otherwise we won't be able to contact you and note that once you click "Done" you will not be able to change anything on the survey.
Throughout the school year there will be more volunteer opportunities sent out through this survey process for annual events like the Santa Breakfast and Shoppe, the Book Fair, Crazy Olympics etc.
Please complete the survey by Wednesday September 30
 Thank you!

SPS Families,
Please be sure to check your FIP packet for a very important contest for Labels for Education that was sent home yesterday.  The contest is a very quick one, but one we can certainly do easily.  Simply attach 5, 1 pt labels to the form and we will get bonus points for each and every form we submit. This is such an easy way to build our spending account.
Be sure to send your completed form and labels for education entry to us ASAP.  They should be sent ATTN:  Amy Spezialetti, C/O  Emily Spezialetti –8th Grade.  No later than October 7th.
Remember every classroom that has 100% participation will get a High Five Certificate and an entry to win an in class movie with treats.  Make sure you include the form with your child’s name and class to get credit.
Any questions, Please e-mail Amy at jspezialetti@yahoo.com.
And be sure to look for more contests as the school year progresses!
Thank you in advance for your help…Amy Spezialetti and Melanie Goodwin, Labels for Education Co-Chairs

SCHWAN CARES
Our Schwan’s Cares fundraising campaign has begun!  Please go to https://www.schwans-cares.com/  and at the top of the page type in St. Philip School and then the SHOP TO GIVE button, it’s that easy.  SPS will receive a 20% return during the first 45 days of the campaign and SPS families will earn 20% for towards their FRQ.  Likely you can place two orders within that 45 day window and try a number of new items for your family.  Also remember that Schwan’s is nationwide – that means that Aunt Flo in Chicago can order or Grandma Kay in Florida can order and those fundraising dollars will come to St Philips.  Orders will be delivered to your house.  Let Linda Zug know if you have any questions – zug3@verizon.net or 412-913-1269.

Required by the Diocese

The following graph indicates St. Philip School total budget.
The entire circle shows 100% of the school budget.
Catholic Parents are expected to pay tuition, 60% of the total cost of education. (green)
St. Philip Parish subsidizes 25- 30% for Catholic students through Sunday collections.(blue)
Non Catholic families must pay tuition, 60% of the total cost of education, (green)
and the 25-30% (blue) since they do not contribute to the parish collections).
Since no one pays 10-15 % of the school budget,
the Diocese of Pittsburgh requires the schools to fund raise 10-15% of the school budget.
All families must do fundraising (FRQ) 10-15% of the total cost of the school budget.(red)

Hope this picture helps to explain why we all must do FRQ (FundRaisingQuota).

GUARDIAN ANGEL PICTURES    9/16
Several parishioners have been working on a “History Wall” in Father Kelty Hall for a couple of months now.  One of the sections they want to have involves a big Icon here at St. Philip Church: pictures taken at the Angel Statue.  Just like the Pittsburgh saying “meet me under the Kaufman’s clock”, so at special moments here at St. Philip’s Parish we say “Got to get a picture at the Angel”. Now, for the history wall and as a permanent fixture at our church, we want copies of those pictures.  No picture is too old or too new. We want them all!  Please search your photo albums and send pictures to the parish office either in the collection baskets, drop off at the parish office or email and we will get the photo printed.  Please do so by September 20th.   Thank you.  See the Guardian Angel picture display in the church on the ramp side.

Square 1 Art - Artwork is Underway
Square 1 Art is a fundraiser that takes your child’s beautiful artwork and makes it into great products for you to purchase. These products are wonderful keepsakes and gifts for family and friends.
The children are working on the artwork for Square 1 Art this week. New this year, Mrs. Bartlett is having them do a rough draft of the artwork so you can see and discuss what they are drawing. If you do not wish to see the rough draft or discuss with your child, that is fine too.

If you have any questions on the Square 1 Art fundraiser, please contact Sue Sniadach at swooz99@aol.com.

SCHWAN CARES
As many of you know, Market Day is no longer and we wanted to find a replacement.  We think we have, through the Schwan's Cares campaign.  Schwan's is a frozen food home delivery service and has comparable food items and prices; however, their return to the school is not as generous, but it is a very good start to help with fundraising and FRQ.  Additional information will be coming home in the FIP.  Please email zug3@verizon.net or call Linda Zug with questions at 412-913-1268.

Our Schwan's campaign starts on Wednesday September 16, 2015 and will run through the end of January 2016. Click here to see our St. Philip page and to get registered:

Thank you
SPS had a very busy and successful first week back to school.
A big thank you goes to many SPS PTG committee chairs for their hard work!
Thank you to Julie Gardner and her crew for a wonderful back to school pool party at Greentree pool last Friday.
Kudos to Lisa Lane and her Hospitality committee for serving great refreshments on the first day of school.
Both of these events helped ease the transition to the new school year.
Also many thanks to Jennifer Shorthouse and Emily Marino.  As chairs of the Parent Partner committee they matched almost 20 NEW families with parent partners.  The partners will help the new families navigate all that comes throughout the school year.

The final thank you goes to the parents who attended Meet the Teachers Night this week and to the teachers for getting us prepared for another school year.

Please use the site below to send a message . It is so easy I just did it in a few minutes .Thank you in advance for helping with this effort. Dr. Bowes

We need our TEXTBOOKS....................
As Catholic school students across the Commonwealth begin the new school year, instructors are feeling the pinch of the unresolved state budget debate. Nonpublic schools do not receive basic education tax dollars, but their students do benefit from line items that pay for textbooks, materials, equipment, and services that support their secular education through the Intermediate Units. The proposal this year finally achieves equity between public and nonpublic students - the line items increase at the same rate. The Pennsylvania General Assembly is considering measures that would release the funds for some critical programs like these.

Urge your state legislators today to vote yes on the legislative proposals that release the funding for the textbooks, materials, equipment and key services that benefit all Pennsylvania students.

Subject: [DHS-STAKEHOLDERS] Child Abuse History Certification (Clearance) Applications
Importance: High
@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

The Department of Human Services, Office of Children, Youth and Families is requesting  that you forward this email as wide spread as possible to your listservs and/or distribution lists so that this information can be disseminated statewide.  We appreciate your assistance with this effort.

This email is being sent to provide you with information related to applying for your Child Abuse History Certification (Clearance) for volunteer and non-volunteer purposes.  Please note that the term “clearance” has been changed in the law to “certification”, so that these two terms have the same meaning for the purposes of this email.

Individuals applying for their Child Abuse History Certification can apply, and if applicable, pay online at www.compass.state.pa.us/cwis.  Applying for your Child Abuse History Certification online expedites the application process and provides the applicant with their results electronically.  The Department of Human Services (DHS) strongly encourages applicants to apply for their Child Abuse History Certification electronically as this streamlines the process and makes it more efficient for the applicants.

For applicants who prefer to apply for their Child Abuse History Certification by paper, DHS will continue to accept paper applications. Please know that submitting a paper application takes additional time to process.

For individuals applying for their Child Abuse History Certification for non-volunteer purposes, the fee has been reduced to $8.  DHS will be issuing refunds for overpayment of fees for those applications that were submitted after July 25, 2015.  For applications submitted with an overpayment prior to July 25, 2015, no refund will be issued.

For individuals applying for their Child Abuse History Certification for volunteer purposes,  the fee has been waived and no payment is required.  For those applicants submitting payment with an application for volunteer purposes, the application will be processed and the payment will be returned.

MARKET DAY FOLLOW-UP NEWS

Hello everyone and welcome (almost) back to school!  As most of you know, Market Day was sold to a different firm that will not be offering our normal selection of food items this school year.  However, over the summer, Market Day was still selling items through the GFS stores.  If you purchased Market Day items over the summer and wish to receive FRQ credit, you must send a copy of the invoice or receipt to Linda Zug to receive credit towards your FRQ.  I did not receive anything from Market Day or GFS to track these purchases.  Please forward the information to zug3@verizon.net or call Linda at 412-913-1269 if you have any questions.  Thanx and have a good rest of the summer.

A Message from the Finance Department:
Tuition payments for the 2015-16 school year
begins July 1, 2015.
If you receive tuition assistance (SOS/BEF),
Please spread this assistance over the
10 month payment period.
For example, if you have 2 children in school
and receive $1000 in aid, your payment for
July 1 through April 1 would be:
Tuition.......$5650
Aid.............$1000
Balance...$4650
divided by 10
Monthly payment.....$465.
This helps us pay teachers' salaries
which are paid over 12 months.

Ecuador

Dear Families,

Hope your family is enjoying summer vacation.  I would like to share with you my adventure this summer.

The Elizabeth Seton Sisters of Charity have a mission, a school and health clinic, in Ecuador that is staffed year round by our Korean Elizabeth Ann Seton Sisters of Charity.  Each year ten of our Sisters, five from the US and five from Korea, visit and teach at our school of K-12 in Ecuador.  July 13 we will go to Chicago for preparation and then fly to Ecuador for the Ecuador immersion and for the charism experience of Elizabeth Seton in that place.  (Charism is the gift of the Holy Spirit given to spread the Good News of Jesus).  I will return to St. Philip July 29.  When the Sisters go to our school in Ecuador each summer, the children call it their “festival”.

Please  pray for us in this immersion experience.

Hope to see you at the St. Philip Festival this week, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.

Sr. Geri  Marr

 SPAA APPRECIATION

I would like to thank all of the board members of the SPAA for all of their hours of selfless devotion to our sports program. We had a great year, and it's because of their sacrifices that we presented ourselves as the great institution that is St. Philip School.
I would also like to thank all of our coaches who gave of their time this school year to help develop our students into hardworking, successful young men and women. We have much to celebrate!
*A Diocesan Championship in JV basketball. *Tournament championships in both boys and girls basketball.
*Playoff appearances by the JV girl's volleyball team.
*Playoff appearances by the JV(section runners-up) and Varsity soccer teams.
* Developmental soccer going deep into its season ending tournament.
*Several medals won by the cross-country and track teams.
Most importantly our students and coaches conducted themselves with integrity in competition. You truly were great ambassadors of our school. Thank you.
Have a great summer. Practice your skills, and we'll see you in the fall.
Respectfully Yours,
Jeff Aiello

Congratulations to coaches Brandon Bergstedt and Bruce Mathews and the St. Philip Track Team who put on an impressive show at the Championships this past Saturday.
Varsity Girls took 2nd place overall at the Diocesan Track Championships yesterday.
Here are the finishes:

Ashley Hudson: 2nd  in individual 100 meters and 2nd in long jump
Ana Bergstedt:   2nd in 1 mile, and 3rd in 1/2 mile.  The final standings of the individual 400 meters race are under review, with Ana currently in 3rd place in that finish as well.
Lauren Clutter:  1st in javelin
Kasey Gamrod:  3rd in javelin
Linda Ashby: 3rd place in individual 200 meters
The relay team of Ana Bergstedt, Ashely Hudson, Rose Fischer and Lauren Clutter took 2nd in the 4 X 400 and 2nd in the 4 X 100 races.

Kudos as well to the boys varsity relay team of XXXXX who missed third place by only 1/10th of a second. The girls JV relay team was short a person so Julian XXX stepped in to help.  The team gave it a valiant effort, but since they were racing with the JV boys, they were unable to medal.
ALL TEAM MEMBERS, many of whom competed as rookies, deserve recognition for an impressive year:  need names.

Come Cheer On Our SPS Athletes
This Saturday, May 9th!

The SPS track and soccer teams have important events this Saturday, May 9th.
Our track team will be competing in the Diocesan championship meet at RMU/Neville Island Sportsplex,
starting at 8:45am.
The track team has had a great season and is looking to cap it off with some medals at this weekend’s championship meet.
Our soccer teams will be playing home games
at St. Paul Seminary in Crafton.
Our JV (5-0) and Varsity (3-1-1) teams are both in first place with only 3 games remaining, so this weekend’s games will go a long way to determining their qualification for this season’s playoffs at Highmark Stadium.
The JV and Varsity games are at 11:30 and 12:45, but don’t forget about our younger teams, who play at 9 (2nd grade) and 10:15 (3rd-4th grade).  If you can, take some time this weekend to bring your families and support our athletes—we know they would be thrilled to have your support.
Thanks,

New drug in Schools...
Please pass this on even if you do not have kids in school.
Parents should know about this drug.  This is a new drug known as 'strawberry quick '.
This is a type of crystal meth going around that looks like strawberry pop rocks (the candy that sizzles and 'pops' in your mouth). It also smells like strawberry and it is being handed out to kids in school yards. They are calling it strawberry meth or strawberry quick.  Kids are ingesting this thinking that it is candy and being rushed off to the hospital in dire condition.
It also comes in chocolate, peanut butter, cola, cherry, grape and orange.
Please instruct your children not to accept candy from strangers and even not to accept candy that looks like this from a friend (who may have been given it and believed it is candy) and to take any that they may have to a teacher, principal, etc. immediately.

RSVP required – complete the form below to let us know how many to expect from your family.  SEE YOU SOON!

St. Philip School Safety Plan

ST. PHILIP SCHOOL SAFETY PLAN

ST. Philip School is committed to the safety and security of its students, faculty, staff, and visitors.  The Department for Catholic Schools, Diocese of Pittsburgh, has researched and prepared a customized All Hazards Plan in conjunction with the

Commonwealth of PA Emergency Management Agency.

Every teacher is involved in preparing the Safety Plan for SPS.

This plan covers all four phases of an emergency:  Prevention, preparedness, response and recovery.

In preparation, at St. Philip School, we are teaching the students different drills, like fire drill, lock down and severe weather drill.

On Monday, October 21 we will practice a lock down drill.  An announcement will be made and the classroom doors will be locked. Students will move away from the classroom door and follow the teacher’s directions. The learning in all of this is that the students know what to do and how to be serious about the drills.

You will be informed as the Safety Plan develops.  Thank you for your support.

GYM UNIFORMS

St. Philip School has been in the process of accepting bids for Gym Uniforms in order to provide the most economical price and convenient ordering for our families.

The focus has been on choosing appropriate, desirable, affordable and available apparel for Gym Uniforms and then transitioning to items for Spirit Wear for children and adults.

Please continue with the current gym clothing procedures for the next few weeks.  If you should need any additional items, please visit the Uniform Exchange outside of the Preschool Rooms; and/or, contact the Main Office.

It is important to make thorough decisions throughout each step of this process to launch a successful Spirit Wear Campaign.  Many great ideas have been generated (i.e. SPS Website Order Placement) and we want to be sure it is convenient as possible for our families.

Thank you for your cooperation.

Re:       Healthy Pennsylvania – Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP)

Governor Tom Corbett recently announced his Healthy Pennsylvania initiative in which a key part is to ensure that every child in Pennsylvania has health care.

Healthy Pennsylvania works to ensure that all Pennsylvania children have access to quality, affordable health care coverage that best meets their needs.

The plan also eliminates CHIP’s six month waiting period for eligible families in certain income ranges, allowing Pennsylvania children to have continued and timely access to CHIP coverage.

If parents contact you for information about CHIP or options available to them under Governor Corbett’s proposal, below are helpful links to information to share with families.

Dismissal
Wait on the side of the street opposite the school or at the bottom of the K of C lot for your child. Please do not wait at the bottom of the driveway. Please do not call out to your child to come to you. Several children were nearly hit last year because parents had called to a child to cross not realizing that we have motioned for the buses to pull up or depart or cars were proceeding up West Crafton Ave.

--Please do not attempt to drive up West Crafton Ave or park anywhere on West Crafton Ave. (West Crafton is the street at the bottom of the driveway.) The corner near the church has been painted with yellow lines and Police will enforce it as a no-parking zone. The bus drivers are complaining that they have difficulty making the bend into the street and getting through. Parking on West Crafton creates a safety problem for children getting on the buses.

--Please do not pull out onto West Crafton Ave when buses are loading or departing. It is illegal to do so and you may be ticketed.

Hello to All St. Philip Coaches, Parents & Guardians:

Thank you for all you do for our kids. We appreciate your time: coaching, working the concession stand, and helping out as needed. Our athletic program would not exist without such great support.

As a new season of home games is about to begin at Bishop Canevin, the St. Philip Athletic Association would like to ask for your help regarding the use of the Bishop Canevin.

We are fortunate to have a strong partnership with Bishop Canevin High School and are grateful for their willingness to share their facility with us.

Treat Bishop Canevin as if we are guests (which we are). Please do your part to dispose of trash, wrappers, water and sport bottles. Please do not allow children to run through the hallways of Canevin or play with sport balls in the hallways. It is for their safety and is respectful of Canevin.

If children are left unattended to play in the hallways of Canevin, we will stop whatever game is in progress, make an announcement, and ask the parents to please get their children.
Parking at Bishop Canevin is in designated spaces only. Reserved parking spaces are reserved for Canevin Administration 7 days a week. At no time is parking permitted around the circle or directly in front of the school.
Lastly, we are asking that every coach, parent, guardian, and player help make Sportsmanship an expectation.

Please Let the Players Play.
Let the Coaches Coach.
Let the Officials Officiate.

And Let the Spectators Be Positive!

GO SPS!
Thank you,
