STUDENTS AND PARENTS: The annual Our Lady of Guadalupe Spanish Christmas mass, will be held Friday, December 11th at St. Paul's Cathedral in Oakland. The entry procession begins at 6:30 p.m., followed by mass, with Bishop Zubik presiding, at 7:00 p.m., and a reception downstairs after mass. Any middle school student who attends, writes a brief report, and shares his impressions of the mass with the class in an oral presentation will receive credit for one of the Spanish culture projects. It's a wonderful opportunity for students and their parents to experience another culture and briefly feel as if you are in a foreign country! You will see children in costumes from their native countries, hear lively Mariachi worship music, and participate in a wonderfully orchestrated mass presented in both Spanish and English, which is easily followed with the help of a written bilingual program. (Honestly, you don't have to know how to speak Spanish to participate in and enjoy the mass.) I recommend sitting close to the front of the cathedral to fully experience all that takes place during the mass. Don't be timid about attending the reception downstairs after the mass, as you can practice your Spanish language skills with willing Latino-Catholic celebrants. Please encourage your child to attend this exciting cultural celebration. PARENTS: Due to many recent colds, we are getting low on Kleenex and facial tissues in 6A. If anyone is able to contribute a box or two, please do. We are also requesting donations of the colorless hand sanitizer, such as Purelle Original, as the colored types tend to have perfumes that aggravate students' allergies. Thank you in advance for your help and generosity! PARENTS: Please check Gradebook to see how your child is currently doing in Spanish. Please remember that ALL Spanish students are responsible for studying 15 minutes nightly from the Spanish notes and vocabulary. To be honest with you, it seems that not many of the students are doing the studying, which is their Spanish homework. Please monitor their Spanish study time. Thank you! SPANISH CLASSES' STUDENTS AND PARENTS: The homework assignments are always posted on the homework page. If a student misses class or forgets an assignment, check the homework page for current assignments. PARENTS: Any student who has low marks in Spanish (C or below for the first 9-week Spanish grade)will be asked to have a parent monitor and sign off on a daily 15-minute period of study. During the 15 minutes, the student should study the current vocabulary and class notes. Each student should also keep current vocabulary words on index cards and do a rotational study of them weekly. STUDENTS: Always make up any work that you miss as soon as possible. ONE missed assignment, which receives a zero, can make the difference between a very nice passing grade and an 'E'!!! If you need help with a subject, see me right away; don't wait until you are failing.
