CYO Shoots to End Hunger

With the holiday season upon us, many of us are taking stock of the good in our lives and giving thanks.  For some that like go that extra mile, they are also giving back.  On Saturday, November 21, 2009, forty first through fourth graders from our Sacred Heart parish community participated in Hoops Against Hunger.  Each participant came to the event ready to practice his or her basketball skills and brought a canned good donation for Catholic Social Services.  Over 200 cans were collected!

This spirit of giving back was not only exercised by the young children playing ball, but it was also exhibited by the many volunteers that made this event possible.  Special thanks go out to Coach Kevin Kelly and the Sun Valley boys’ varsity basketball team who gave of their time and talents to teach the youngsters the necessary skills to play basketball.  They encouraged the kids with tremendous spirit and were excellent role models to both the young participants and the Sacred Heart CYO varsity boys’ and  girls’ teams.  The Sacred Heart varsity boys’ and girls’ basketball teams should also be commended for their leadership role in Saturday’s event.  This group of boys and girls also graciously gave of their time and spirit to encourage their younger comrades.  Finally, a special thank you goes out to the young men who volunteered to box and count all of the cans that were collected for Catholic Social Services.

All of the people involved in Hoops Against Hunger had a lot of fun while working for a good cause.  It is hoped that everyone who is eligible will come out again next year.  For those of you that missed it,  look for the announcement next year.  It is a great way to give back during a season of giving thanks.
