SCIENCE FAIR
I posted a new page with information that will help your child with the
Science Fair. All students are required to participate! I will be guiding the
students along with their project by using the steps of the Scientific
Method, however most of this project will be worked on at home. Their first
step is to ask a question! They must get their question approved by me
(anytime before Jan. 6th) before they start any work! They may email me over
the holiday!
Newspaper
I posted our December classroom newspaper! Please visit the Document page to
view it! It may take a few minutes to upload.
Happy Holidays! Thank you for sharing the gift of your child! It is very
rewarding to work with each and every one of them! I hope that the children
enjoy reading their books! Have a wonderful Christmas and a Happy New Year!
December 4, 2009
Due to weather conditions that they are calling for on Saturday evening, the
Movie Night has been postponed to Monday evening in the school cafeteria.
December 2, 2009
Mr. Brunner announced that the boys may wear a Christmas tie!
Final grades will be posted tomorrow morning!
November 18, 2009
Uniforms
Please check the student handbook for the Winter Dress Code guidelines.
After Thanksgiving break, all dress code violations will be addressed.
Mr. Brunner reviewed the uniform policies with all the students. A sweater
is required for all boys...it can be a vest, crew neck, or cardigan. They
are also required to wear a belt.

Newspaper
Please read our classroom newspaper! It is posted on the document page! The
newspaper is optional. Encourage your child to participate in the next
newspaper. The next articles will be due December 4th.
Conference Forms
Please return conference slips as soon as possible! As the forms are being
returned to me, I am setting the dates and times that have been requested.
Then I am sending the form back to you with a highlighted date and time that
I have scheduled for you. Please check for the form in your child's
assignment book!
Folders
As you check your child's folders, please ask them about their papers. The
students are informed of papers that they should keep in their folders. They
are coming to me telling me that their parents discard the papers that they
need! For example, we never discard any brainstorming sheets, rough drafts,
and data that was collected for our writing pieces. It is part of their
writing grade. Please be aware that I hold the students accountable to be
responsible in keeping specific papers in their folders!
November 13, 2009
We had a fabulous time on our field trip today! The students participated in
teambuiding experiences, and were actively engaged in a forest study and a
stream study! Ask your child to share the highlights of their trip! I am very
proud of them in the way that they presented Sacred Heart!

Online Gradebook
I will try to update grades online every week as the semester comes to an end
soon. Remember that all graded papers are sent home in their test folders.
Some grades will not be posted until the end of the semester because they are
averages. If your child is missing a grade, most likely I have asked your
child to review it or your child may have needed extra time to accomplish it,
and I may not have had the grade at the time that I posted it. If you have
any questions or concerns, please email me.

Optional Assignments
I posted optional assignments. These are tasks that extend the topics that
the students are learning in class. Students are encouraged to work beyond
their potential!

Science Project Update
The students created their animal in Art class today. Next week they will
color it. The students are assigned to create the animal's habitat at home! I
am having them accomplish this task at home because they have more
availability and use of materials. They have seen examples from past years to
help them with some ideas. Habitats will be due Nov. 11th! The writing will
be accomplished in class.
Unfortunately, our field trip that was scheduled for today was postponed due
to the weather conditions. However, our field trip has been rescheduled for
Friday, Nov. 13th!
October 26, 2009
Field Trip
Our class field trip is Wednesday! The students are to wear their winter gym
uniform with old sneakers. They will be outdoors the whole day, rain or
shine. I would have your child bring an extra pair of socks and shoes incase
they want to change when we get back to school. Please bring a bag lunch..no
containers, please. We would like to throw away all trash. Thank you!
Classroom Newspaper
The fourth grade will be writing a classroom newspaper. It is an optional
assignment for students who would like to challenge themselves to extra
creative writing. The categories are Community News, World News, Class News,
Story Time, Poetry Corner, Favorite Quotes, Share a Book, Interviews, and
Jokes and Riddles. The children are excited to start this project!
Science
We have ended the unit on Living Things. As a culminating project, the
students will be writing an animal report (in class), creating the animal's
habitat (at home), and creating the animal itself (in Art.)
Approximate due date will be Nov. 13th

Math
In math the students are beginning to work on double multiplication.
Students learn in different ways. I have taught double multiplication in
three different ways: Standard form, Expanded form, and Lattice. I
encouraged the students to try each approach in class before choosing the one
in which he/she feels most comfortable using. We will be practicing double
multiplication daily for a few weeks.

Field Trip
Thank you for sending in the trip money and permission slips quickly! There
were many of you who would have liked to chaperone, but unfortunately, I
could only choose three. The names were placed in a can and the names
selected were a parent of Christian, Ally, and Isabella. Thank you.

Social Studies Project
Students received directions along with a rubric, and a layout practice sheet
for their project. The students are able to work independently or with a
partner. Please keep in mind the due date, and your busy schedules! The
students may use a variety of materials with parental permission/guidance. In
class, we have discussed different ways that it can be presented. Today the
children started by just listing the requirements that he/she will be
including on their project. Tomorrow we will practice labeling the features
on the layout map. Next week I will give them time to start the writing
component in class. The students are to save all their rough copies to turn
in with their project. Please email me if you have any questions!

Reminders....studying for tests!
In the parent information powerpoint from Back-to-School Night, I listed ways
that you can help your child study for upcoming tests.
In class, we have also reviewed some test taking strategies such as looking
back for answers, looking for clue words, and eliminating choices.
When I post a test in class, I always make the students aware of what
information will be on the test. We walk through the pages of their text, and
review what types of questions may be asked. I tell them the format of how
the test will be set up, and I consistently repeat some of the short answer
questions that will definitely be on the test.
October 2, 2009
I just received confirmation on our class fieldtrip which will be on
Wednesday, October 28th. I want to quickly inform you that the cost of the
trip will be $30 which includes the cost of the destination and the bus fee.
More information will be coming home on Monday...I just wanted to give you a
notice of the cost of the trip which will be due by Oct. 15th!
If your child is interested in becoming an altar server, there will be a
meeting Thursday evening at 7:00 pm in the church.
September 28, 2009
Math is a spiral curriculum in which we use our basic math facts daily!
Please help your child to learn these basic facts. We will be starting to
multiply this week! Please take 15 min. each night to review their
multiplication facts.

Thank you for attending Back-to-School Night! It was nice to meet all of you!
I am looking forward to having a wonderful, productive year! Incase you were
not able to attend, I posted my powerpoint presentation on here for you. If
you have any questions or concerns, please email me.
If you are not able to view the powerpoints, please let me know. I can always
send a hard copy home with your child.
September 16, 2009
Book orders were sent home. Please do not feel obligated to purchase from
the book orders. I usually pass book orders out each month. All the book
orders are part of Scholastic. I send home a variety of book orders incase
you need to purchase books for others. Lucky orders are geared towards
grades 2-3, Arrow orders are geared towards grades 4-6, and TAB orders are
for grades 6-8.
Payment: I prefer that you pay by check, however I will accept cash for the
order. Checks should be made payable to Scholastic Book Clubs. Since all the
orders are part of Scholastic, you can total the purchases, and have ONE
final amount. If you have any questions, please email me.
Thank you!

Service Activities
These are two service projects that our class will participate in throughout
the year. If it's a rainy day or you are looking for a family activity, these
services may also be accomplished at home with your other family members.
Any work can be sent in with your child and I will mail them out with our
class mail.
Color-A-Smile
Students will have the opportunity to color pictures to make people smile!
Color A Smile is an organization that collects crayon drawings from school
children. They distribute these drawings to Nursing Homes, Meals on Wheels
Programs, and Individuals all across the country.
(You can find more information, print outs, and referrals if you know of
anyone who would like to receive pictures at www.colorasmile.org)
Soldier Cards
Students will have the opportunity to create cards to soldiers that are
currently on active duty protecting our country!
(If you have a family member, friend, or neighbor that is currently on active
duty, please send in a name and address, and we will send cards to that
soldier!)

It was a fantastic day! Thank you for having all the supplies ready for the
first day! I also want to thank those who graciously donated items to our
classroom. It is greatly appreciated! I hope that your children enjoyed their
first day of school! Ask them to share with you about their first day and
what they have learned!
September 8, 2009
Smile, tomorrow is your first day of school! Remember to get a goodnight's
rest, and eat a healthy breakfast in the morning. Fourth grade does not have
a snack break, and lunch is at 11:15.
Please bring in your supply money! We will be setting up our notebooks!

Parent Question: How many extra folders?
On my supply list, I posted extra folders. You will receive two folders when
purchasing the school supplies. I encourage that you buy at least FOUR extra
folders. These are the folders that I will be using in our classroom:
Test Folder (One folder from your school supply purchase)
Homework/Take-Home Folder
Desk "Keeper" Folder
Desk "Working" Folder
* Mrs. Heisler and Mrs. Martin are also requiring folders for Art and Music. *

Incoming Fourth Grade Families:
Welcome! I hope that all of you are enjoying your summer. I look forward to
working with you and your children this upcoming year. I have posted the
school supplies that your child will need for this year, a wish list, and
just a few reminders.
SUPPLIES PURCHASED AT SCHOOL:
It would be greatly appreciated if your child is able to purchase the
school supplies on the first day of school.
7 Copybooks $10.50
2 Folders 1.50
1 Theme Tablet 1.50
1 SHS Assignment 3.50
*Tech. Fee 2.00
TOTAL $19.00
NOTE:
I listed the basic supplies that your child will need this upcoming year on
the "Supply" Page. Please check the list!
WISH LIST:
I am thankful for all the donations and extra supplies that the students and
families have given to our fourth grade classroom each year! If you would
like to donate any of the following items to help our classroom this year, it
would be greatly appreciated!
(If you are willing to donate the following, I listed some items by last
names to avoid an overabundance of specific supplies.)
Tissues (Last names A-H)
Cleaning Wipes (Last names J-S)
Hand Sanitzer (Last names T-Z)
Computer Paper (To publish writing and create soldier cards)
Mailing Stamps (To mail service projects)
REMINDERS:
Please make sure you label your personal items, especially folders, pencil
bags, lunchboxes, and your gym sweatshirts!
All textbooks will be required to be covered. I listed book socks on the
supply list, however, you may use paper brown bags.
It is strongly suggested that you purchase contact paper to cover workbooks.
It keeps the workbooks in better condition.
I posted a pencil bag on the supply list to hold all their supplies. I
prefer a pencil bag or zip-lock bag only because the pencil boxes usually
fall, supplies scatter, and the box breaks.
