“I am among those who think that science has great beauty.”
Marie Curie
Have you ever seen galactic images from the Hubble space telescope?
Spectacular. Have you ever seen velcro magnified 100X? Amazing. Have you ever
seen the inside of a cell close up and personal? Wow. I hope that there will
be many ‘wow’ moments for you in science class this year as we take time to
appreciate the gifts of beauty that exist around us and learn the amazing
ways in which they function.
The study of science is many things, the least of which is a body of
facts. Science is an attitude that is willing to see things from a different
point of view. Science asks us to not judge until all facts are present.
Science is a way of thinking that helps us make sense of the world around
us. Most importantly, science is a vehicle to allow us to appreciate our
Creator in a different light.
Science helps us turn our dreams into reality. We have only to travel
back a few years to see this reality. Can you imagine your life without
computers, i Pods, cell phones, video games? Just ask your parents.
It is important that science does not exist in a vacuum. All subjects
are connected to science. Most obviously math, as it is often the language
in which science is expressed. Technology is integral; it helps us express
data graphically and is a tremendous source for research. Science is
inseparable from the study of Religion; it helps us understand and appreciate
God. Even in Social Studies, scientific discoveries have been the catalyst of
many historical
events.
